Cool - just did another speed test, got 1.72M/bit down. A huge increase and alot more use-able than 0.11 earlier, but still not the 10M/bit I've been promised over and over again. Imagine the money they'd be losing if they were offering compensation..

It depends to which server you are testing. No ISP guarantee full speed all the way around the world. If I test to Auckland server (which is hosted by WorldxChange) then I am getting good speeds:

That's because TelstraClear does not peer with Citylink (where the test server is) in Wellington, which means if you live here the traffic needs to go overseas and back for the test.

Always use the Auckland server for testing.

Wouldn't testing via the Auckland Server be against the whole 'international' speeds problem? I'm trying to test somewhere accross the world. When testing using the Vodafone speedtest I get 10M/bit all the time

All ISP provide a 'best effort' service and can't have control outside their own network.

Is anyone else having painstakingly slow speeds at the moment? I know that speed tests aren't perfect but I'm only getting about 1.2 Mb/s to Auckland (usually 3.5 or so), plus my latency to Warcraft in Los Angeles is about 5x what it usually is (1250 vs 250 ms).

It definitely isn't. Using Wellington Cable and I've been dealing with this for about a fortnight now, at seemingly random times international speeds will just plummet. Other times its fine.

over the last few days I am getting the oddest behavour - when working on sites hosted in the US - most of the pages will serve quickly - but just one page won't load for up to 60s. It doesnt matter if I hit ctrlF5 change browsers from Chrome to firefox - just one page out of maybe 30+ won't load. There is no consistency as to which page - but it seems to be one I've hit a few times.

to expand this even further... it's not even theoretically possible to download something over TCP cross the world on wire speed; not even if you would have exclusive dark fiber. (HTTP is TCP for those not familiar)

because the protocol relies on ACKs until more data is sent the RTT (round-trip time) becomes a factor. further you go, less you can get.

knowing your RTT it's possible to calculate what's theoretical maximum from a given source. (approximation, naturally as also the RTT fluctuates)

with UDP you could get faster, but then you'd need to build error correction for lost traffic.

Over the last few days I've been getting some rather bad packet loss and general connection perfomance to international servers. Browsing isn't so bad but within the game I play (Star Wars Galaxies) and through Ventrilo I'm experiencing constant packet loss (the game is reporting up to 15% at times and never really dropping below 5%) and ping spikes on Ventrilo.

Currently on TelstraClear DSL in Christchurch (sadly, I'm literally a block away from being able to get Cable). If anyone wouldn't mind, do a ping test to chilastra.starwarsgalaxies.com and help me see if it's just a problem for me or something actually wrong with Telstra. It's making gaming rather frustrating :(

i wouldnt call that an issue.

packet is switched to reach (i would guess) in west coast USA; there is a bit of latency with reach/l3 but again that's not too abnormal, maybe slight link congestion but not really (or just router under enough load it delayed some answers). when it's cross USA to east coast again with good numbers.

after all, you got all your 91 packets cross. on BAD internet, you'd lose even those small traceroutes...

you really can not expect less than 120 or so ms to west-coast, it's not exactly next door.
