G.729 uses around 30mb per hour. So $1 could give you 20 mins talktime.

Most of my calls are ~2 minutes, and mostly incoming.

This lets me have VoIP landing direct on my mobe* 24/7, which is of great value to me.

Is it not obvious that the VOIP restriction is to prevent mobile users primarily using VOIP for calls rather than their voice plan. Good to read it won't be restricted though. (you could run it through a secure tunnel) :)

OK, to clarify the whole VoIP thing.

We don't support it. There are quality of service issues that mean we cannot guarantee VoIP calls.

HOWEVER, and this is important, if the use of VoIP becomes customer impacting, we will clamp down on it. So, if your use of VoIP (or any other technology for that matter) adversely impacts on the rest of the customers, Vodafone reserves the right to step in.

This is not uncommon, either within Vodafone NZ terms and conditions for other things (eg Best Mates is a phone service, not an intercom) or internationally among other teclos: if you're doing something that means other customers can't use the network then we'll have to take action. See also bandwidth hogs using outrageous amounts of data etc.

Its very obvious to many, but Vodafones official line is a little different (more of a "You may have a bad experience" than "We don't want to lose call revenue").

Always best to clarify with the source.

I have tried it on both an n80 and an N95, both results were well unacceptable for proper use when operating over 3g and moving. When stationary and in excelent signal it was ok, but still not really the sort of call quality I would want to be using as a phone replacement.

I really just use it since I have no voice plan on the nokia and prepay rates are so expensive on the other phone for daytime calls. Works out ok for that and 1 gig should give heaps of time ;)

So it's VoIP it's self, it's the protocol that has a latency demand beyond Vodafones network capacity at times.

Are there other applications/games that could also issues with this latency, video?

However.... *ears still ringing*

Opps I phone my best mate on viop (as I can't use bestmate as an intercom) and Vodafone network could not handle the load and dies,
it's that my problem or Vodafones network?

Vodafone against Voip is nothing new.
Its been in the On Account T&C's for some time that you agree not to use Voip or even things like "Message over internet protocol"
I was beginning to think at one point that Blackberry Messenger was against T&C's but its just PIN-PIN messaging, but its over IP...so...hrmmm???

Ok WTF Vodafone , Im sorry but I may have misunderstood a little bit becuase this just seems absurd. First off the walled garden was great! Free Youtube, Bebo, Wikipedia ect... But now its not???? Why not and when did you plan on telling your customers? Also Does vodafone live! cost to browse now? becuase didnt you used to have the little motto "its free to browse" or something, so now am i effectivly going to get charged for checking my snow report subscription which I have already paid for (some pages in the section are like 300kb ie whakapapa cams). Or will I just get charged for looking around the music store for something to buy (which again is stupid).

Why couldnt you have just left it how it was, and clarified the situation to the customers about what sites were free and what wernt (then you wouldnt have to worry about little johnny and his $5). By the way I think 10mb/$1 is pretty alrite (but why only 10mb per day how about 100mb/$10) but seriously leave vodafone live free, aswell as bebo, youtube ect, and charge only for sites outside like google.com or digg.com.

Hi Dawn, you must be new here. Have a look at the rest of the thread, you'll find I've answered this question (why) and the charging issue, and why you can't have a walled garden where things are free but you're limited in access AND have unlimited access. It just doesn't work.

Namely, could you please comment on the advice given in that thread that it is free (until July) to surf m.trademe.co.nz?

I was under the impression that the rule still stands (as of now) that you have to use the VF Live! gateway/walled garden?

Or can I just browse directly to m.trademe.co.nz for free?

If I have to use the gateway, is there ANY chance/risk that in normal use that I'd end up outside the walled garden without a warning, and therefore be charged?

Use Vodafone live! to get in and you're fine. If, however, you visit a site and then follow a link out beyond that site Elsewhere you'll get a bill. Stick to the Trade Me site (or Wikipedia, or any of the others on the live! site) and you'll be fine.

That's why the walls are coming down - it's simply too difficult for most customers to remember "Am I on the site or moving off, will I get billed or not".

Does that mean that you are fine whether you visit TM directly OR via VF Live! Or is it ONLY if you access via VF Live!?

For this question, I'm meaning that once on TM, we stay there and don't get linked out.

Hopefully this page on our website will help.

It says:

Try some of NZ's favourite websites free on your mobile until July 27th

Head to the Hot Links section on Vodafone live! for a selection of NZ's favourite websites that you can access free on your mobile until July 27th. Sites on offer include Trade Me, Facebook and Bebo.

Which means if you go to the site, go from Vodafone live!'s Hot Links section and you'll be fine. Stay on the site (eg Trade Me in your case) and you're fine. I can't give you any guarantees if you go in another way. It may work, I don't know. All I know is, use the live! Hot Links section and you'll find a list of sites you can visit for free.

Live! will remain a hub or a portal if you want to use that old term... even once the walled garden comes down. Instead of finding places you can browse for free, you'll find a list of the top sites that have either proven their worth in terms of popularity or are specially adapted for mobile use.

How's that?

That's a good reason to drop the wall, webpages are becoming more dynamic, pulling resources in from google, yahoo, live and beyond. If the wall only covers www.thispace.net then you's be billed for all those ~~calls~~ data.

The VoIP ban thing, what you described is more like a Denial of Service attack not VoIP.

So in VoIP 1MB for 2 minites = $1

I can see how those bits are not like the others, the give the user a cheaper call.
searching google, 1MB of in 2 minites = $1 And these bits dont compete at all.
