I do enjoy having the quick flick around Vodafone Live, when waiting for friends, or at a cafe, and knowing that it's free. Especially if it includes Facebook, YouTube too! I don't really get why would anyone hate the idea of a few websites being free to browse!?!?!?

The way I read translate it is, inside a 24hr period starting @ midnight:

from 0-0.2mb, you're charged at $5/MB. (ie if you download 100kb you'd only be charged 50c). (NB - this is how I translate the $5/mb up to $1...)

From 0.2mb-10mb, there's no charge.
10mb on, you're charged $1/mb.

And everything resets @ midnight again...

So, some examples:

0.15mb - 75c (0.15 * $5/mb)
5mb - $1 (inside the 10mb limit)
10mb - $1 (hit the 10mb limit)
12mb -$3. (10mb for $1 + 2mb * $1/mb)

et cetera.

I haven't used the vodafone browser for anything other than sky tv for the past 18 months. For day to day browsing on my old Moto V3xv I use opera mini. Is it time to change? Are there any advantages to using the vodafone live portal?

It's really just a matter of personal choice. IMHO Opera Mini is a far far far superior browsing experience than the new WAP proxy server. I believe the WAP proxy will compress content slightly more than the Opera Proxy so you could use slightly less data but it would only be a minimal amount.

Personally I am much happier with the new scheme. I was never a big fan of walled garden stuff - just let me view whatever I choose to on the internet, including your content, and charge me reasonable rates.

A+

(Just my opinion of course - I can see for prolific LIVE users that it is a worse deal).

While this is fine in reality how do you expect this to be managed? The issues that VF have experienced recently with people being charged to browse sites that should be free show the issues faced trying to provide access to external sites where the only way to zero rate traffic is via IP address or URL.

Vodafone's move to charging data rates for browsing Live! is a move back to their original charging model and this new plan is a change being dictated by the Vodafone Group, not just NZ.

It says:

Try some of NZ's favourite websites free on your mobile until July 27th

Head to the Hot Links section on Vodafone live! for a selection of NZ's favourite websites that you can access free on your mobile until July 27th. Sites on offer include Trade Me, Facebook and Bebo.

Which means if you go to the site, go from Vodafone live!'s Hot Links section and you'll be fine. Stay on the site (eg Trade Me in your case) and you're fine. I can't give you any guarantees if you go in another way. It may work, I don't know. All I know is, use the live! Hot Links section and you'll find a list of sites you can visit for free.

Live! will remain a hub or a portal if you want to use that old term... even once the walled garden comes down. Instead of finding places you can browse for free, you'll find a list of the top sites that have either proven their worth in terms of popularity or are specially adapted for mobile use.

How's that?

And for those of us that can't access Vfone live Paul?
Is there any other way of getting to the hotlinks menu with the free sites on it apart from vfone live ?
Perhaps a web link we can only get to from our mobiles ?

I've given up trying to get to Vfone live on my JasJam ..

Thats great that we finally have a prepay data plan coming up at long last.
Anything is better than the current $10 a megabyte. I'll finally be able to use my mobile for something else than getting email headers ..

Vodafone: * Standard Vodafone Connection Terms & Conditions apply. The Casual Daily Rate does not apply to Telemetry devices, which provide automatic measurement and transmission of data over the Vodafone data network. Voice over Internet Protocol use is prohibited.

There's a list here. The list is not maintained by Vodafone of course and may change at any time.

Mind you this all changes from when the new casual data rates begin, everything will be charged.

All those sites should work on the Jasjam through the Internet gateway, which brings the question: are these free on the WAP gateway only?

Vodafone data services (seems) to be competing with Vodafone voice services, and well Vodafone has never been any good at dealing with compilation, even if it's coming from within it's own business, sure they can see that a change is comming. Move on Vodafone, get over IT.

Vodafone protocol prohibition is child like behaviour.

Thats the one, previsouly it had said it wasn't covered by the new casual pricing plan, now its prohibited
