Vodafone also offers VDSL.

So surely they can switch you to VDSL without breaking your contract?

I will quiet happily give up my 200/20 FibreX Plan on half price rates for 6 months and switch to more stable VDSL. Heck even ADSL.

That's worth a try. I thought that would be the same as breaking the contract tho?
I was on VDSL, with Worldxchange, who are now owned by vodafone anyway, and by and large the service was great.
I only ever had a couple of issues in god knows how many years, plus the wifi was powerful all over the house. I was on voip with them too.

The increase in speed of fiberx is of no real value to me. We do not stream or game or netflix etc.

Just finished playing pass the parcel with with VF. I eventually spoke to a guy who was actually a network guy.
He tried to tell me that if I went back to VDSL I would have the same issue, despite the networks being owned by 2 different crowds. Not sure I believe this.

I am on WWH.1 node anyway, for what its worth.

cheers
Jeff

I don't buy it. All these faults seem to be on cable.

I've noticed the past 2 nights now the net has dropped shortly after 6pm, needed to reboot the Cable modem and router to get the net going again

W40 node.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I've found WKH/Island Bay *much* more stable of late. @disrespective and @sideface might like to chime in with their experiences too. @mikehales are you able to share or confirm whether or not there has been an upgrade or config change?

I was trying to work out why I found the mini-outages (an hour or two) just so aggravating. First it was the timing; I don't get large amounts of leisure time nowadays and when I do get some it all seems to be internet dependent. It was just when I was about to sit down that it seemed to go down.

But more significantly, I think it was the pattern. Every time I called the call centre to report the outage, they were (rightly) dealing only with the immediate problem before them. Whereas I had the baggage of several other similar calls behind me and each time got more and more frustrated by waiting on hold then going through the basic trouble shooting script. It got to the point where I decided it wasn't worth calling; waiting a few hours usually resolved it and calling didn't obviously make it any quicker.

The net effect of the pattern of outages was far more than the sum of each individual outage. I think (roughly) A = a^n where A is my current level of aggravation, a is the aggravation I would normally feel in a similar situation, and n is the number of times that particular situation has occurred in the last 6 months.

I doubt it's possible, but just once it would have been refreshing for a CSR to respond with "I'm sorry to hear that your internet is down; I see you've reported other similar issues before, so if you've followed all the usual trouble shooting steps, I'll report it up to the techs and we'll get it fixed as soon as possible. Bye!"

Mine has been down a couple of times in the last week too, and I always find it funny that I am the only person ringing, ( thats what they say ),  given that the next thing I am told is, that there are 249 other people experiencing the same problem, because the node is down, as they find out, when they check it. My main beef is that I have 2 daughters, and having no internet, for them, is like having no oxygen, plus I had no problems when I had VDSL.

@mdf Yeah, the last couple of days have been a bit better than in recent months. No noticeable outages or slowdowns to speak of. No complaints from the family either so that's gotta say something, heh.

I'm not holding my breath however. Two days does not make a habit as far as internet stability goes. Ask me again in a month as to how I feel.

How do we get on here? Would I need a static IP ?

Yes, you need a static IP. If you've got one, @michaelmurfy can add you to his smokeping server. There's one small adjustment to make to your router settings.

I'd have to say that I've not experienced any noticeably outages (Island Bay WKH3/4) in the last 5 days.

Smokeping appears to back that up.

Lately when there has been an outage, I've called Vodafone and asked them put Data to my wifes phone - as she's on Vodafone prepay - and they've been happy to do it.  Obviously it's not ideal, it at least keeps her connected and hopefully (though I doubt it) rattles some cages as they're giving away free mobile data.

On a side note, has anyone been charged additional usage on their account?

The last two bills I've had, they've charged me for data.  They've reversed it obviously but I was wondering if anyone else has had that.
