I am currently on an old 100GB 130mbps cable plan ($120 w/ phone and TBox)

I find the 100GB allowance pitiful and so I am looking at bumping it up, however I need to keep the cost down. My options are the new 500GB 50mbps plan ($119) or 150GB 130mbps $139 (or staying as is...)

However once I switch to the current plans apparently there is no going back.

I am mainly concerned with the international speeds, as I stream NHL games very regularly. I wonder if anyone has made the switch from the 130mbps down to 50mbps and could comment on the real life performance hit?

50Mbps should be plenty for video streaming, unless you are watching multiple streams simultaneously.

kaczor47: Yes, the HTPCs are gigabit ethernet. I can live with 50mbps for basic browsing, I am worried about the video streaming.

Basic browsing on 5Mbps and 50mbps is likely going to be much the same. Perhaps you should measure the bandwidth you consume while watching the games, if it's below say 40Mbps (to allow for overheads) then it should be fine on a 50Mbps service.

Considering video streaming will only be using a few Mbps you're not going to notice any difference.

Hi,

If your content offshore is delivering at over 50Mbp/s you would notice a difference. Given that 50Mbp/s can virtually stream anything. The performance impact wouldn't be noticeable unless your streaming 4K HD un compressed.
