so, playing devils adocate, if it's impossible to prove, how big will the effect really be?  

going by what you have been saying, customers are going to be having an absolutely awful experience without a master filter (and causing an awful experience to other VDSL users),  but if the effect is too small to be able to prove, that doesn't seem to gel with that.

I mean, without a filter are we talking constant drop outs for all VDSL users on the cabinet, and 10-30Mbps sync reductions,  or are we talking a 2-3Mbps sync reduction?

affects are low yes, i expect if you had a whole road of people causing crosstalk and such from this though, you would see a far worse affect on lines.


end of the day, not only is the potential of affecting other customers counted out for the most part by having a proper installation (be it a splitter, or a single jackpoint) you also likely to have a better line to play with too.

Going by sbiddles previous highly emotionally charged posts on the matter, one would be forgiven for thinking that the effect of bigpipe having a few vdsl customers around the country is only marginally less bad than the zombie apocalypse.

But of all we are talking about is a few Mbps, and only then for the customers who don't have/get a filter anyway, then I don't really see the issue. Seems like most people (except TimA of course :-p )wouldn't even notice the difference between, say, 25Mbps and 28Mbps

Yes, maybe if telecom or voda were doing it with tens of thousands of customers, but bigpipe is tiny and hasn't even started charging customers yet.

Heck, there have probably been more chorus fails on the install (like with the op) that go unnoticed than there are bigpipe customers on vdsl without a filter, and probably more old snap vdsl customers who signed up during the couple of years before filters were standard.
Just seems like an overreaction, if the effect really isn't all that big.
