Ok, this is an odd one.

For the last month, our ADSL connection with Vodafone (formerly TCL) is dropping in and out between about 7pm and 7am.  We might have a connection - regular speed, regular ping - for a minute, then it starts timing out in a random manner.  Pinging will either result in all pings timing out, or one to two packets getting through at regular speed and the rest timing out.

And in day time, the connection seems completely and utterly stable.  Completely. At night: internet is basically unusable.  Problematic. The chorus tech has just came - in the day time - checking an issue that only happens at night.  Surprise!  He didn't find anything, either at our house connection (where he re-stripped and reconnected everything), or at the local exchange.

As he couldn't find anything, he suggested we change back to the crappy telstraclear dynalink modem from our TPlink (oh, really?  Why isn't it giving us issues in the daytime?), and check our alarm monitoring setup with our alarm company (oh, really?  Why isn't it giving us issues in the daytime?) Possibly related: From the dirt on our lawn, and the new plastic dome (with ADSL written on it) over the wires out there it looks like our neighbours recently got a broadband connection.

So, as a thought experiment: what might cause connections to die at certain times of the day and not others?  (In case we have issues again tonight.) - Vodafone ADSL 80gb plan

- Type of connection: ADSL2+, main computer accessing it by ethernet.  No torrenting or even video streaming!
- Your modem DSL stats (right now, so daytime, when working): sync rate: 8930Kbps down, 921Kbps up, attenuation: 193 db up, 393db down, noise margin: 91db)
- Pakuranga, Auckland.
- Urban
- Not sure if connection is to to an exchange, cabinet or conklin
- Isolation test done at night for everything except the house alarm, which is connected in the alarm box to the phone line and I don't have access.  No issues.

TP-link TD-W8960N modem.  Will double check that it's running the latest firmware, but unsure why that would only affect things at night.

Ok, update!  Problem seems resolved.  I've been running pingplotter over the connection for the last few days to track.  Even though Sat night was weird, I've had no issues since - pings firing off and coming back at regular speed.

Talking to the chorus tech, it seems that when the neighbours got their new ADSL connection, it was hooked up at the front of our properties where multiple lines converge.  His idea to re-strip, check all the connections, and rewrap them seems to have dealt with the issue, which he thinks was either moisture getting into a connection, a loose connection, or some form of interference when they were using their connection heavily.

Ye olde adage came into play: first look for what has changed.  Neighbours getting a connection was *it*.  On the up side, based on your suggestions - thanks all - I've now tidied up some of the house wiring to ensure it won't be the potential cause of things in the future, and the alarm monitoring will either be switching to IP or cell over the next month, depending on what sort of deal the alarm company can put together for me.
