Things are getting absurd with cable performance. It's a comedy how it's being handled in terms of communication. The congestion issues seem to be spreading and the uptake of Netflix etc. is just starting. I'm getting close to the point of taking my money elsewhere if thing don't improve soon and drastically.

Hey folks... Just received a note from Tony Baird, Technology Director - Vodafone NZ about this situation:

As is clear from TrueNet’s report, Kiwis have embraced a new world of digital content, rapidly taking up Internet TV and streaming services. The exponential growth in demand for data has meant the entire industry is under pressure across all networks – Vodafone is seeing 7% growth every week as video streaming and the use of services like Netflix and NEON increase. Video streaming accounts for approx. 60% of Vodafone’s home broadband traffic and the rate of adoption of our UFB plans has tripled over the last year.

We appreciate the frustration our HFC cable network customers in areas of Wellington and Christchurch are experiencing at peak times. We’ve already made improvements but there’s further to go and we’re continuing to work to fix the problem. We’ve invested more than $6 million into improving capacity and expect 90% of this work to be complete by August 2015, with 100% completion in September.

Chorus has also acknowledged congestion across multiple areas on its network. It is completing its DSL capacity and upgrade programme, with work scheduled for July which will improve services for all New Zealanders.

Vodafone’s network performance is consistently ranked higher in other surveys including Google’s HD Verification and the Netflix streaming report, which measure a greater range of data points than the TrueNet report. Netflix published results showing that in June, Vodafone customers enjoyed the second fastest Netflix streaming speeds in New Zealand – only 0.01 of a megabit per second behind the leader. Globally, Vodafone New Zealand performed better than most ISPs around the world, including all ISPs in Australia, UK, US, and Canada.

There it is... An official acknowledgement. JohnR is off the hook now - he's been keeping everyone updated here on this thread and I'd really appreciate for more "personal" comments to back down a bit.

On the other hand, I am on the same boat, as a cable customer for years (since Chello days).

Just a few more weeks (or months)...

While my ADSL connection the last week has been much slower than Vodafone off peak, it's much more reliable and often faster when I actually want to use it. No streaming issues, no issues resolving CDNs, no stress and no anger. I don't know the results of the VDSL upgrade today but eff it, I'm done. Currently on hold to Vodafone cancellations. 11 minutes and counting...

DjShadow:

Have read up the TDR pages and found a section on it saying they likely won't act if the problem is just slow speed, I know if its the middle of the night or best part of a week day it can hit full speed

It is not "slow speed". It's a network problem, acknowledged by the management who sent out a letter to all customers on HFC promising full functionality restored by October 2015.

This did not happen. There's no firm update on when things will go back to normal.

Go to TDR.

Vodafone sent out a letter to users , date 7th July. The first reference here is from this post.

Full stream ahead, Wellington

Hi there,
We're upgrading our network to improve data speeds in your area.

With the huge success of streaming video services such as Netflix and NEON, we're seeing massive spikes in demand for data across New Zealand, and on Wellington's local cable network. In fact, it's a 30% increase in data usage on our network every month!
That's why we are spending millions ensuring your network not only meets current data needs, but future ones too.
At different times of the day, you may have noticed your network speeds have slowed as it's trying to meet demand. We want you to be able to use the network to your heart's content. So we're putting steps in place to upgrade our network to ensure consistent and reliable fast speeds.
You'll notice two step-changes of improvement over the next couple of months as we release the network enhancements we're currently working on. You will see improvements in your Broadband speed by August and then experience consistent and reliable fast speeds from September.
After that, it will be 'full stream ahead' for all our Vodafone customers so you can make the most of doing more of what you love online.

Regards
TonyBaird
Technology Director

Since then we have been told repeatedly that works is being done. Since this is happening continuously, you should be able to refer to the letter.

@gbwelly I think my last VDSL speedtest was about 55Mbps, but as it's always consistent, with no peak congestion, no random dropouts and none of Vodafone's messed up DNS and CDN issues, it never crosses my mind to do a speedtest anymore. It just works, exactly as a service I'm paying for should.
