Can someone please explain what this 4G extended is?

It appears to be 4G on 900Mhz but Vodafone's website says they use 700, 1800 and 2600:

What are the Vodafone NZ mobile network frequencies?

If this is the case, why is "extended" on 900 and not the more common supported 700?

Pretty sure I saw @NikT (think I got his username correct) say that 4G Extended is 700Mhz, because some phones that support Band 28 (looking at the Nexus 5X here..), only support a fraction (the part that Spark own).

3G Extended = 900MHz

4G Extended = 700MHz

Principles are the same, 700 is to 4G as 900 is to 3G (Although 3G 900 was rolled out to urban centres a few years ago and 4G 700MHz has not been just yet AFAIK - it gets more complicated because 4G works differently to 3G, e.g. cell breathing, & more, smaller, high frequency cells work better in urban areas than a single tower does, while the reverse is true in rural).

The term '4G Extended' differentiates handsets that have wider band support - can't tell people what the benefit is without having a name for it. When I was in Voda's devices team, I pushed for 4G Extended as the term for 700Mhz, since it's important differentiation, and telling a customer 'This phone supports the APAC 700Mhz 4G LTE band 28' will net you a blank stare at best. A phone with 4G Extended means 700Mhz is supported, and therefore you can get more four gees in more places. :)
