My father in law is up from CHC, and has an iPhone 4 he's been using for ages. About a day and a half or two days ago (it's hard to get specifics) his phone disconnected from the Vodafone network and will not reconnect at all. We swapped the sim with my brother in laws Spark sim and it worked just fine. When we popped the VF sim into my brother in laws Nexus 5, it worked just fine. So it seems to be an iPhone/networking issue. Have there been changes in/around Brown's Bay which would cause this? It seems a bit strange.

He will upgrade his phone if absolutely necessary, however he's up there in age and used to how the iPhone works and likes the size as it fits nicely in his pocket. Just curious what else I should be trying with him, or if it just needs to be upgraded. Cheers.

This is where I get to look like a bit of a jerk. I met with my father in law today, and found out he did in fact swap the sim at Vodafone in the Albany mall, and since then it's been working okay. He said he's only getting 1 bar at my brother in laws house where he used to get more, but isn't concerned with that.

He did confirm they had swapped the sim into my brother in laws phone and it worked fine, and brother in laws spark sim worked fine in the iPhone. The person at VF said he hadn't seen anything like what was happening, but swapped his personal sim into the phone, and it came right up. So it appears this may have been a funky sim issue that was difficult to pin down, and is working properly now. I feel like a bit of a jerk for the thread, as it didn't seem like a sim issue from the information I had at the time.

So for now, this is resolved. They'll be heading back to CHC this weekend, so it should be fine until they leave. None of the rest of us are on VF, so it we couldn't swap it with a VF sim to check (though the spark and another sim worked). Sorry for the thread. I'll mark this as answered. Thank you all for the assistance with this.
