Hey folks

Finally having moved from Android to iPhone, I am experiencing some wierd network behaviour with my iPhone 12 Max on the VF network.

(I've been on Android since the Nexus S days and am loving the iPhone)

Does someone know of a fix or should I escalate to Vodafone?

Problem:

While on the Kapiti Train between Takapu Station and the main train tunnel, my iPhone drops down to 3G.

I understand from other posts, the iPhone favour strong 3G over 1 bar 4G (mistake if you ask me), and my phone does drop down to full bars 3G.

However while on 3G there is no connection at all on any app (browser, whatsapp, messenger, etc) despite full bars.

This happens without fail every time, and lasts in the same locations.

Temp Solution:

If I turn on flight mode, then turn it off straight away, the phone then reconnects to 4G (1 or 2 bars) and all is happy.

Unconfirmed:

My phone doesn't drop down to 3G very often, so I can't confirm if the issue is just related to this location.

I haven't tried calling during this time actually - will do tomorrow.

What have I tried unsuccessfully:

  • Changed 5G setting from on to auto to off
  • Toggled roaming
  • locked to Vodafone
  • changed to auto provider
  • toggled enable data during issue
  • restarted phone
  • waited

I am positive 3G works elsewhere, but I cannot recall any exact moments. I will keep an eye out for it over next few days.

It would have been great if it was just the SIM card. Unfortunately despite all the great advice from here you are still at the mercy of the telcos fault finding process.

VF left me a message today, they want to tag or log my phone to try and find the fault, so what ever that is I will call them tomorrow and get that process started.

Long road ahead me thinks.

I advise other VF customers who are having the same issue to log the problem with the Helpdesk referring to this thread.
