Im currently having difficulty with a company who we have our 0800 number with, they are trying to play silly buggers and not release our 0800 number so we can port it into our own phone system because they 'own the phone number'

Now, I always thought there was some sort of legal requirement for them to release it should we request them to?

I've tried googling so I can send him a link saying 'well you kinda have to' but im not a voice guy so my searches aren't yielding much.. is someone able to help?

Or.... am I completely wrong here?

Is your telco a member of the NZ Telecommunications Forum?

Would probably come down top what your contract says from when you "purchased" the number - does it say you have ownership or that the provider retains it ? If the latter, then without going through court (i guess - IANAL) not much you can do.

If you put your port request in, and you get your account number & account name right, they cannot refuse the port

Its been like that for years now (since 2009 ish) - you, the account holder owns the number, not the telco

0800s are weird as they aren't as regulated as local numbers.

But I'm pretty sure 'ownership' is still the same, numbers are simply 'leased' under the NAD so no one actually owns anything and should let the number be ported on request.

But if they are employing tactics like this, they are probably just a reseller from the likes of 2talk/Voyager/Vibe so dont actually understand things. They to find out who the reseller is and contact them directly saying one of their partners is acting unethically.

Our current SIP provider is but the company that holds our 0800 number isn't on the members list

Our marketing dept cowboy'd this one and went off and ordered it at $500 a month with access to a contact center but all they've ever done was have the 0800 number divert to a mobile phone.. huge waste of money for the last 5 years and they've now come to me to see if there's a cheaper alt.. yep.. there sure is..

Will get marketing to dig it out and take a look, funny thing is on their website they talk about being able to port numbers into their services!

True for LCA and mobile numbers. But is it the same for TF?

Ah I guess this is where I have gone wrong, i'm a bit old school and I just emailed our account manager for this service and asked the to tag it for release so there was no surprises when the porting request came in..

I have a copy of all the account details so I will just pass it onto our current sip provider and see how it goes.

Cheers!

I don't fully understand the porting rules, but if you were buying it as a contact centre service, which came with an 0800 to use, maybe it is possible they're correct and you don't own the number?

NAD! now that's what I was looking for

The NAD administers New Zealand's national telephone numbering resources, including all local numbers (03, 04, 06, 07 and 09), mobile numbers (02X), free phone (0800 and 0508), premium rate (0900) and special service numbers (01XY and 10XY), amongst others. Parties to the NAD agree to adhere to the NAD's rules and principles and in exchange can apply for telephone numbers to provide services to end-users.

Thanks for the help everyone, learn something new every time I pop in here :)

Will let you know how I get on

I would say your drawing dept. signed up with a contact centre solution provider, and they gave you one of their 0800’s.
