Just received:

TelstraClear is letting kiwis surf the web, watch video and email to their heart’s content all the first weekend in December. From 6pm on Friday 2 December until midnight on Sunday 4 December, data used by TelstraClear residential broadband customers will be free.

“We say we’re the home of broadband and we’re putting our money where our mouth is,” says Steve Jackson, TelstraClear’s head of consumer markets. “At 6pm on Friday we’re switching off the data counter, meaning that any data used over the weekend is free and won’t count against a customer’s monthly allocation. If you’ve been waiting to check out those YouTube videos or try your hand at online gaming, now’s your chance.

“We know that people want to get online and discover the world but sometimes worry about the amount of data that might be used. That’s why we already un-meter a range of popular sites, including TradeMe, the Mediaworks/TV3 family of sites, and our own unmetered Steam gaming server. Because people often have more time outside the working week, we’re helping Kiwis make the most of the Internet with our unmetered weekend.”

Steve Jackson says TelstraClear knows that this weekend will be very popular. "With lots of people online for longer, some customers could experience slower than normal connection speeds, but we think that being able to do much more online without using any of your data pack makes it worth doing .”

Awesome, though I have a feeling by the time Saturday peak time hits people will be on dialup like speeds.

Will be interesting to see how well TelstraClear's network holds up.

It could well be a "test drive" to see exactly what it would be like.

I may just have to take advantage of this, are there any legitimate 1080p torrents or hosted videos that would make for great download tests? I'm thinking larger than regular linux iso's.

I know Nine Inch Nails has some high def live concert rips (uploaded to bittorrent by the band for fans to make their own dvd's/blurays from) which I will finally be queuing up to download.

Cheers for the notice Mauricio.

Norwegian TV have a 22G torrent of Bergen to Oslo via rail avaiable if you want to try it. Not sure if the Hurtigruten video is avaiable - all 134 hours of it

Hmmm that's a good idea.

http://vodo.net/ is a site with legal torrents. I've downloaded quite a few a year ago during my tests, and probably will check it out again soon for more content.

Does residential broadband includes both cable and ADSL customers? I would assume so, only mentioning this because I haven't had an e-mail from them about this and I am on cable.

It was a press release, not a customer mailing.

The more cynical person inside me thinks that they're performing an upgrade to the "data counter" and they don't have any backup ;)

Hi 1080p. It applies to all TelstraClear residential customers whether on InHome (cable) or HomePlan.

Cheers, Gary

I doubt that, if it were the case, they'd just stay shtum on the fact rather than encourage people to grab as much stuff as they possibly can quite possibly creating a poorer experience for general usage over the period.

Snap got a fair amount of publicity for their free data weekend, not surprising to see more ISP's use the same promotional tricks.
