http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/telstraclear-tv-campaign-slams-ufb-bill

It comes across as rushed with a touch of sore losers, the URL is a facebook page with little content about WHY Telstraclear is saying it's bad etc etc

Bit lame when they cant even get their website working.

Firefox can't find the server at ultrafastnz.co.nz.

Needs the www. on it. I thought that lameness died in about 2005?

Heh, I noticed that. Seriously it's got the detail of an ad campaign that was thought up, worked on and deployed whilst drunk

Lol...typical. Rather than TCL working with what's been offered and trying to make do, they spend more money whining about it. I do agree, it does sound a bit sore loser-ish.
I wondered what happened to Neil Waka.

Very typical of Sky being reactive rather than proactive.

Who remembers all their previous smoke and mirrors marketing flings with major media announcements and then nothing happening.

The problems with the Government's proposed legislation are obvious to everyone except Minister Joyce and Telecom. That's why consumer groups and telcos (except Telecom) are united in the need for change. When consumer groups and telcos agree you can be certain that something major is up.

The reasons for the united stand are outlined in a letter to all MPs that was signed by consumer groups and telcos. It's on the TUANZ site: http://www.tuanz.org.nz/blog/e379f711-b2b6-4423-9e32-4a8bf9f301db/93b69cb7-10f8-4553-8795-31149c4bab...

The same group also offered the Minister a proven solution to the problem but he tossed it aside without a second glance: http://www.tuanz.org.nz/blog/e379f711-b2b6-4423-9e32-4a8bf9f301db/0dee83fa-b0fb-4a9f-a07b-bf3d2174ac...

TelstraClear and the others are fighting this because customers will suffer - not just ours, but everyone's... including everyone on Geekzone.

There's awaelth of detail on our website: http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/company-info/ufb-legislation/index.cfm

I suggest that, if you want UFB with services you need and can afford, you find out more and start getting vocal about this highly flawed legislation.

TelstraClear is taking a stand and we are putting our money where our mouth is.

I agree with TCL there is major deficiencies in the governments UFB market engagement strategy.

The only outcome of the current process I can see is regional UFB monopolies that make it hard for potential competition to start up. Nor do I think the govt has nouce to be involved in this market by requiring Telecom to bundle / unbundle. State intervention in the free market is seldom successful plus I saw enough inefficiencies at the Post Office to not want Telsomunications nationalised in any shape or form.

Personally rather than pick UFB winners supported by telco regulation - the govt should invest its $1.5billion by competively tendering to the market to buy UFB services for its key infratsructure, e.g. hospital, schools, etc..

By specifying UFB standards- the market would decide how best to provide to each site and at what cost. Once they are providing to the govt site - the UFB provider could then sell to private sector around it.

In urban areas - ideally this would be a panel approach of multiple providers with annual price reviews to establish competiton.

(and no - I have no connection to TCL or any other telco)

Pretty straightforward. Government is giving the providers of the UFB (LFCs or Local Fibre Companies) a 10 year period where they can charge whatever they like for services delivered over it. Without any regulation in place as we currently do with copper based services this means LFCs can charge other providers (and ultimately the consumer) whatever they want without any fear of government stepping in and whacking them on the nose. There's potential here for LFCs to give their own telco/ISPs preferential pricing and/or make UFB provided services available at a premium. That's the issue.

Low basketball net & team with 15 players = LFC, High basketball net and team with 3 players = everyone else, no referee = no regulation

Retail ISP's are not allowed to be LFC's so how are they going to give their own ISP preferential pricing?

Remember Telecom's bid for the remaining areas actually involves selling the usable parts of Chorus and Telecom Wholesale to an entirely new company that's not owned by Telecom.

Also Vector might beat out Telecom in Auckland.  CityLink might beat out Wellington and other consortium's may beat out Telecom in other areas...it's not a done deal yet.

Those arguments are red herrings.

The real issue is should we have the ComCom regulate UFB pricing from the start or is having the LFC's be part government owned and directed to offer L1 and L2 services at standard rates good enough?
