Hello, a while ago my sister stood on her laptop screen, took me a while to get round to looking at it, and removed the HDD formatted it and am now using it as a external disk, bit short sighted, but found a cheap screen for the laptop, and now would like to get the laptop up and running again. is working well, except the lack of a hdd and OS, She still ahs the backup/restore disk, and am wondering what the limitations are on these.

Can I use this to write to a new HDD (old 60GB, want a new 160GB 2.5")

Can I boot from the restore disk to install,

Sorry never used backup restore before, not too sure whether to buy a new OS, or use the restore disk. The main problem is the Disk is in Rotorua, and the Laptop is in Auckland, and won't be heading that way for a while, so not sure whether to buy or try the disk?

Yea if she still has the physical CD/DVD Recovery Disc/s then you should have no problem putting in a new HDD and booting off the Recovery Discs.
May need to check the BIOS to see if it is set to boot of the optical drive first.

The new HDD you put in may have to be formatted first, may not too. Some recovery discs/installs wont see a brand new unpartitioned/uninitialised disk.

will check that thanks, actually got an asus recovery disk, from another laptop, the images on the recovery disk will be for acer hardware to an extent I guess? but do you think that would work?
