I found that AVG was slowing the response time of explorer 8 so I changede to Avast.This seemed to help for a while but now lags a long time now.When I disable avast the problem is fixed.I'm not sure which part to close down.I wonder if it was some windows update at some stage that has contributed to this as well.

Any thoughts on options for anti virus or settings that will not slow IE8.

I use microsoft security essentials. Seems fast enough.

Im running MS Security Essentials as well and had no issues - although I do notice on XP, it seems to hog resources something chronic slowing down the system - Windows 7 it runs fine.

I have given MS security essentials a go.I'm using XP pro and IE8 which is now running like a rocket ship compared to the past.

Avast seemed good but had so many shields running unless you disabled them.Likely to be slowing down system in all regards.

Slow computer?
I use Avast and have never had any issues with it slowing the pc's or lappy, even on my 800mghz celeron public use pc theres no noticeable slowing

Never had a problem with slowdowns using Avast.
The shields that are not in use do not use resource, to any significant degree.
I'd be more interested in what AV's were on the computer in the past - I know you've used AVG - and were their respective removal tools run?

Also what other security software is installed?

Oh God, what've I done to it now??

Why not try using Firefox?

I'm using Avast! right now, and have never had a speed issue, except during scans (to be expected).
Also, AVG has always been slow for me on any computer.

I wasn't having issues with the system.I was the time it was taking for IE tabs to open and close when surfing the internet.It think even AVG is aware that there has be issues.

IE is slow full stop. Even with the latest greatest PC IE still is slow and buggy!!
As a previous reply said, Use FireFox, it is vastly quicker and superiour to IE.
