This is probably a simple Q?

How on earth do you get rid of [or stop] programs from putting icons in the notification area. Some programs dont have an option of "Place icon in the Notification area?".

In the registry somewhere??

I dont want to delete the program neccesarily, just kicks its dam icon out..

depending on what you mean to "delete"? if they are like QuickTime system tray icon, or norton antivirus stuff like that... most programs allow you to "don't show icon in system tray" or "don't preload or load when startup" option. However you will have programs that MUST have a system tray presence.

But if you are using XP and you just want to hide them, for example system tray icons that MUST be loaded, then right-click on the notification area, select "Customize Notifications" and go through the lists and do "Hide when inactive" or "Always hide" or "Always show".

maybe if you list the icons what you want to get rid off, we will able to help which one can be removed and which one cannot be removed..

You can try disabling the programs at statup byt goin Start > Run, type msconfig then click OK. on the startup tab find the offending program(s) and uncheck their entry, click OK and restart.

Apart from antivirus you dont really need anything else. this will also speed up your start up times. a lot of programs have stuff that starts up in the background that is not required - not all of these will show in the system tray either - but msconfig will show you all of these.
