surfisup1000: Some comments (haven't had time to look much though) --

Start button -- not really a start button, it just brings up metro like before. Bleh!!

First thing to do:

Right click on taskbar, choose properties, go to navigation tab, tick "when i sign in or close all apps on a screen go to the desktop instead of start" and "show the apps view automatically when i go to start"

Unplug any USB device you have connected to your PC during the update. Also make sure all existing drivers are up to date.

Went to try and reinstall after unpluggeding my phone and a USB drive....

And now it's downloading the entire update again.

rather than start new thread decided to put this here.  Last night Windows Store showed Windows 8.1 update for my Samsung Ativ XE500 T1c tablet.  I decided to go ahead and all went well.
As downloading does compatibility test and no warnings came up and eventually restarted.  Problems.  no sound, no wlan, no video driver  and no drivers for Bluetooth devices and unknown device.
Oops I had no drivers and Samsung site for it under drivers tab says drivers unavailable.  After searching found some on internet and hoped for best.
Main ones I needed were the chipset drivers and that gave sound back. Video drivers which fixed video crashing. Wlan for internet again and touchscreen which got rid of the bluetooth devices and unknown device in device manager.  So all up and running now.

I upgraded from the preview and discovered that it did not do a clean install which meant that I still had a disk full of applications, but no way of getting them to re-install. In the end I used the recovery partition (Surface Pro) and went back to windows 8, then upgraded as per normal which as given me the fresh image.

Couple of things I did when prompted is turn off some of the tracking stuff and also tell it not to put everything onto skydrive.

upgraded from preview yesterday afternoon all went smooth, clean install as expected, all the apps are there as shortcut links, and if one checks the program files folder, they are all empty, my downloaded files in downloads folder in tact. Nice job MS for a change.

kontonnz: I've gotten used to win8, and rather gotten used to lack of a start menu etc; some of the admin side still a PIA but upgrading has been more painful then pulling teeth out(ok maybe an exaggeration, but still painful)

  • very very slow, started last night downloading the upgrade on my surface pro, and as of now still only at around 40%
  • multiple downloads for multiple systems running windows 8 (this is very much a pain on a capped internet connection) i.e. i have 3 computers my main desktop, surface (love this tablet), and hp laptop, each system is downloading just around 2.5gb each for an upgrade; what ever happened to single download and multiple upgrade paths MS stuffed this one up

out of curiosity is MS Store cached via Akamai ?

what do you mean by "what ever happened to single download and multiple upgrade paths MS stuffed this one up" ?

Gilco2: okay. still not showing up on my Samsung Tablet or my htpc.   Took 30 minutes downloading and it setting up which I thought was very quick.  Dont notice much difference from 8.0 so may not update the others. Have to play a bit on this one first but doesnt seem alot changed. Still not much customisation available on the tiles.

may not update?

I'd recommend you do.  Windows 8 support lasts for another 2 years

There are heaps of changes, I'm surprised you haven't noticed them more.

Apart from anything else it uses less disk footprint, and less RAM

Customisations on the tiles, can you describe what you would like it to do?  You can now have 4 size tiles, you can boot to desktop, you can personalise the Start Screen background, including showing your desktop background, you can use the All Apps view and choose between date installed, name, category and most used....

Maybe this post it useful http://blogs.technet.com/b/askpfeplat/archive/2013/10/17/exploring-windows-8-1-start-screen-and-start-button-options-and-configurations.aspx

Tockly: Just updated my Surface to 8.1.

Took about an hour (ish) to download and complete.

Nice having Outlook again so I don't have to use the stupid Modern email client. Which was just plain awful.

curious to know what you find "stupid" about the Modern Mail client in Windows 8.1

I find it the best Mail client on any of my touch tablets (Nexus 10, Nexus 7, iPad and Surface)

Windows 8.1 photo app -- I like to have slideshows running during the day. But microsoft still expect you to have all of your photos in 1 single folder -- they don't allow the slideshow to navigate subfolders. Who stores all their photos in one folder?

Why on earth wouldn't they at least have a setting to allow subfolders? One of their billion programmers could have thought of this rather useful thing.

There is actually no really good slideshow program for pc's anywhere. I want itunes type 'photo' smart playlists.

Anyway, on the brief look I had, I still don't like 8.1 - it doesn't seem overly changed . I will investigate more and maybe I am completely wrong and there is a hidden windows 7 emulation mode :)

If you want Windows 7 just use Windows 7 :)

for the Slideshow, have you looked at the Photo Screensaver, the photo slide show on the lock screen, or the Windows Photo Viewer?

sonyxperiageek: Hmm.. just updated and it seems like there is a watermark at the bottom right hand that says:

Windows 8.1 Pro
SecureBoot isn't configured correctly
Build 9600

I have double checked the bios settings and SecureBoot IS on! Not sure what the problem is?

Will continue to do a Google search in the meantime...

even after enabling SecureBoot in the BIOS and rebooting you still see this error?

this is expected, upgrading from 8.1 Preview to 8.1 final retains your data, but apps need to be reinstalled

this was mentioned on the webpage when you upgraded 8.0 to 8.1 Preview

I have updated all but htpc and will do that too.  I seem to be one of few who actually liked Windows 8.  I do like 8.1 as well.  Finding more as I use it.  Samsung XE500 was tricky as had to reload original windows 8 drivers.  I made decision near beginning of year to stay with Windows and not switch to linux.  Windows just works so well out of the box and has for me been reliable.  Just dont have to muck around making things work as I did with Linux.  I also love how movies I purchased on xbox 360  show up and work on Windows 8 so dont always have to start the xbox just to watch a purchased movie. So yes will update all to Windows 8.1 and stay with Windows for foreseeable future

Tiles I would have liked to make a size I like. So if i wanted an extra large tile I could do so.  The other problem I had, I hate to admit was a left over from classic shell.  I dont like it myself but I tried it as the church wants me to remove vista and put Windows 7 or 8 on it.  I told them might as well go for Windows 8 than 7 but have to have it easy for the older ones to use who are used to XP and Vista.
