Having seen the last 6 Builds of W10, I have fairly serious concerns about the ability for this product to be "ready" by July 29.

It's possible I guess. Based on the quality of the builds and the time it's taken to put bugs away, I'd have thought August, or September would have been a better target, though I do know that often bugs are fixed but don't make it to specific builds and maybe they will put all the bug fixes in a single build near the end and it would be the complete product we are all hoping for.

When will RTM be released, because that's usually many weeks before the official release...

Either Microsoft staff are going to be working 24x7 for the next 2 months or we're going to have a very buggy release.

don't think of it as a release on July 29, but a series of ongoing small incremental updates that will deliver continuous innovation.

I'm hoping that Windows Update works properly. I'm stuck on build 9xxx because it doesn't work - it downloads the update but won't apply it (the exact error message was posted a while back - doesn't matter). If all they fix is windows update, which gives them the ability to do continuous improvement, that's a win.

Microsoft is targeting 1 billion installs of the Windows 10 OS in the next 2-3 years which will require a massive number of large downloads - this will put a strain on their servers and the Internet in general.

It will be interesting to see what happens on July 29.

From my understanding of Windows builds in the past,  it normally took 90 days to move from RTM to GA status which under the old rule would have made the GA date September some time  (Windows 7 went RTM on July 22nd and GA in October and Windows 8 went RTM on August 1 with GA in October as well).     I suspect Microsoft probably have enough telemetry from the open beta from the public and from manufacturers to be confident of being able to shorten that timescale somewhat.

The process I would like to work out is for a Surface pro that was upgraded from 8 to 8.1, will there be a way of updating the system image on the recovery partition to Windows 10?

It can be, if you have to download it ten times for ten computers, or even if you have to do it a few times because it fails. At least with a CDN it should be fast.

Grab the latest ISO from Insider Preview and install it that way.

Will the updates be delivered as torrent to other machines in same LAN?

Brumfondl: So we have an official release date:

Another version of windows, yawn

Bing NZ finally coming out of beta at the same time to support Cortana functionality in NZ - now that is friggin exciting. If we can have a supermarket duopoly here then why not a search duopoly too

I'm sure it's been answered somewhere, but my google-fu is failing me: I upgraded a licensed windows 8 machine to windows 10 preview ages ago; now with the release of the final version on the horizon i wonder if my version will automatically upgrade to a full licensed version of win 10 when it's released? Similar question for my daughters laptop which i upgraded from windows 7 to win 10 preview.
