Yes, I do have a Technicolor modem! My PC is connected to it by Ethernet cable.

It is a SPARK supplied TG589vn v2 VDSL modem.

To date I am not aware of any problems. (Other than it possibly causing my Samsung S3 phone to complain about "You internet connection is unstable" which may be due to some quirk from the modem).

that will be your problem then, windows 8.1/10 dont like the way the technicolour handles some DNS querries/requests and will fail to load some pages, doesnt happen all the time, but does happen.

2 ways to solve this, manually set the DNS in the computer, and find the batch file with the DNS fix for the modem. use telnet and login to the modem and run the batch file.

windows 7 doesnt have this issue.

pretty simple fix if you know what the problem is :)

Agreed, this is what i did, new modem supplied free of charge and problem just disappeared

Yes - updated 2 laptops fine, but Creative X-Fi driver issue at present on my PC however may have workaround.

Start menu not bad, however running Classic Shell to give it that nice Windows 7 feel about it

alienstew: I have a Dell XPS1340 notebook running Win 7 Pro, it has an Nvidia GF9500M graphics card which Win 10 hardware check reports as incompatible with Win 10. I emailed Nvidia for a solution and they reply -

"This issue is a result of Windows 10 not meeting the required minimum system requirements and this is not a limitation from Nvidia."

Anyone got any idea what this actually means? Is it that MS haven't fulfilled their own spec and Win 10 is somehow "lesser" than Nvidia expected, or is this just another buck passing excuse?

I would ask them exactly what requirement windows 10 doesn't meet. That answer is too vague. You want to know if there's a fix, or going to be one. You don't care who's fault it is or isn't.

Does anyone know of a cbr/pdf reader thats as quick as sidebooks for windows, and has a bookshelf based on importing from a directory?

Side books is awesome, it loads ahead, and reads fast. Reading a mag or comic with slow loading kind of ruins the experience, so the reader has to be as fast as possible.

So far I am pretty disappointed with the options. I would pay if it was actually decent.

i have not read all the pages in depth. But upgraded today and rolled back due to the system no longer detecting my external monitors.
Dell tablet on a dell dock with dell externals, one DP the other HDMI. all purchased as a package July 2015.
Updated the intel drivers and no change.
Rolled back, all is well. Will give it a while longer i think.
Anyone else had issues with external monitors?

upgrades are substantially more reliable in Windows 10 than ever before

When clean installing, while slightly (and only just slightly!) better than upgrade from a pure *Windows* perspective is actually worse from a PC perspective unless you have *all* of your drivers available.

The Windows team has stripped a lot of inbox drivers from the image and your initial experience for your PC will be worse with a clean install.

Also check if there's a BIOS update. Required for the Dell Venue 8 Pro before the upgrade, so possibly for yours also.

Yes yes I know, I avoid them like the plague, however MS in their infinite "wisdom" make it a mandatory part of getting a license. Apparently MS paid "special" attention to the upgrade process, and to be fair I ran all the previews on a secondary laptop and it was dead stable and I had very few issues.

As I alluded to in other threads, to me the product went backward quite quickly in the last 2 months of preview builds, and I intimated it wasn't prime time ready, something I feel vindicated about now.

It's on my list of things to do, fresh install, but I have hundreds of apps and a fresh install is no small task and I don't have the time right this moment.

Interestingly my machine at work has BSOD (HP 8300 SFF Machine). I can honestly say I haven't seen a BSOD on a machine I've owned in over 10 years, and this machine has never skipped a beat.

Hardware tests show no issues and given how stable before, believe it's a W10 or driver issue, though the intel drivers, nic drivers, bios, graphics and sound are all up to date.

Also as Nathan has alluded to, fresh install gives a lesser driver experience than an upgrade so I'd as likely be worse off in some regards.

Yep I don't doubt it is better than ever, but even in the best world there are just so many factors outside Microsoft control. If a 3rd party driver in a previous incarnation has changed (kludge) some system parameters you are really better off without that going forward into a new system, and the list will go on.

I'm looking at Win10 at the moment. My slow and elderly desktop is well overdue for a replacement, which I have been delaying because the Win8 UI was so utterly and irredeemably awful. I late September, when I get back in the country, I will have to decide between getting a Windows box or abandoning MS and making the move to a MAC.

I just haven't had a chance to have a decent play with it yet, although I have had a brief tinker with a WinX box.

So far, what I like:
- It seemed clean, zippy and responsive
- Metro seems able to be pretty much banished
- Good support for lots of RAM, multiple desktops etc.

What I am not that keen on:
- The US still seemed a bit schizophrenic in places
- You still need a third-party add-on to properly restore the start menu to the clean Win7 one I like.
- Removal of media center
- MS's deliberate efforts to make browser choice harder

What I dislike a lot:
- Forced updates (it's *my* machine, and I will decide what I want to update and when, thank you MS).
- Invasive privacy destroying telemetry reporting back to MS, which doesn't seem able to be fully disabled.
- The other snooping (emails etc) that the machine seems to do, and which MS seems to have given itself pretty much carte blanche to abuse as it sees fit (I don't want my emails read, used to target advertising, and shared with your business partners thank you!)

No. I have no idea how it compares to Win 7 as I've never used that either.
