I'm using both.

The problem on 8.1 Pro was it seemed to be related to turning on from sleep or hibernation. It would sometimes jump almost direct into a restart without warning and I would lose any work in Microsoft Office. That was real annoying if I'd turned the system on just to do something in a hurry because I then had no chance of getting anything done. It's not such an annoyance for me now because I run two laptops with synced data.

On 10 Home it might have been a similar issue but Windows tended to update and restart when I wasn't actually working on the laptop. But nor was it at the time it was scheduled to update.

On 10 Pro I don't remember having any problem.

The upgrade itself went reasonably well, except for a few minor hiccups. I am not complaining about that.

Then Windows started updating and rebooting even while I was in the middle of something, causing me to lose work. After this happened for the second time I decided it was ridiculous to be at the mercy of the OS so I changed my settings to the extent I could to stop the auto-updating. This is not something I want to prevent, but I do want to be in control of it, and Windows has taken that away. Even so, I still lost more work when Windows decided to reboot and I noticed that some of my settings kept changing even though I had the updating turned 'off' by using the wi-fi setting.

The reason I postpone updates is because if I don't, Windows breaks in to whatever I am doing and I am sick of it. The only option it gives me is to defer updating until the middle of the night, but I do not leave my laptop on when I am not using it so Windows then decides to interrupt whatever I am doing whenever it feels like it. This is a stupid way to design an operating system. It is supposed to exist for the convenience of the user, not the other way around.

I just want to add something to clarify my anger: I am a writer and I still do a lot of writing, though no longer for work. Sometimes I may sit for a long time thinking about the phrasing of something. On more than one occasion, Windows has decided at these moments that the computer is not being 'used' and has started a long update just as I was about to type something. This is not something a creative writer, or anyone else, appreciates.

Are you on a domain?

I upgraded my home PC on a whim.

It's been OK. I generally use the Google universe from my Windows PC...so all the OneNote and Onedrive and related things I have never looked at. I just don't trust Microsoft so see little benefit in vesting time and energy in offerings they change in sometimes horrible ways (like Win 8 / 8.1).

Google are better. Their platform was well developed before MS decided to start playing catchup.

Nope. Nothing like that at all. Just my own standalone pc at home connected to my own router. Whatever Windows does to me, is decided by Windows.

I have upgraded 2 laptops so far and they run without a lot of problems. My own is running since the day it came out, all I have is a mouse driver problem. My mouse seems to tend to double clicks when I make only one click. First I thought it was my mouse, but I had the same problem after changing it to a new one. I am also not very fond of the automatic updates that I cannot turn off. So far they don't give me any problems though.

All in all I did not have as many bad experiences others seem to have. The upgrade went fine, all of my programs still worked afterwards without having to install them again. I have no problem with the start menu. I use Chrome instead of Edge. I played around with Cortana a bit in the beginning, but well it fades quickly.

For me Windows 10 works better than 8 or 8.1

Interesting you mention the double click - I've got a laptop with a touch pad and i thought it was just me being a bumble fingers - but I do find the same thing

I don't use One Note or On Drive all that much but I trust Google less than I trust Microsoft. The only Google product I use is Chrome, I go out of my way to avoid other Google products.

I think that depends on what you're used to using. I know someone who has recently started to use Gmail and Google docs because they work with an organisation that uses them and they absolutely hate Gmail and Google docs. So I'd say YMMV

This is slightly off topic but informs this topic ..

I decided to try out the office 365 subscription route instead of the OEM version.

I have bars popping up telling me there is a new version (sound familiar?) that wont go away (sound familiar) without a registry hack that has to be repeated at various times.

Really peeving me off as I know Office 2016 is stuffed with flaws in outlook that make the falws in 2013 look manageable (we regressed a lot of clients to 2010 owing to iMap and other errors in 2013 - known about but not fixed).

It seems I wont have an option about upgrade soon and updates are coming in messing up my work (as per the writer above).

It really scares me the way MS are going - and not just office but as you can see in this thread Windows 10. It's nanny state computing forcing you to take what is good for you, even if it doesnt meet your needs.

Windows 10 and now office make me feel like I have lost control of my own PC. This is MY PC, I will make decisions for it, not MS. Even stupid stuff like power controls dropping performance while i am doing stuff that doesn't touch the keyboard. I want my CPU running at full speed even if i am not touching the keyboard as there are background processes running that demand the speed (bulk processing)

I'm also getting more, you cannot run that app messages, as MS doen't know the app, and I'm not talking aobut home written, really weird stuff here but some pretty common apps. The choices being made about Java and Flash are also scary as Java backends an aweful lot of excellent functionality.

Not a happy camper with MY PC being taken off me. Subscriptions legally mean I dont own what i am paying for and cant control what i am given - that's a dangerous state to be in - someone else deciding what is best for me.

I found quite a few people who reported mouse issues, but most of them were told it likely their mouse and not an issue with Win10 or drivers.

Further to the above, I can understand the reasoning of forced defaults to avoid service calls from non-technical users who shoot themselves in the foot. However, there should be options, as there used to be, for those with sufficient technical ability to take control of their systems.

Nanny state?

Deep breath....
No one is being forced to do anything. At all.
No one was forced to use 10. 7 is still available (for now)
No one was forced to do the free ug
No one was forced to buy into 365, instead of Office retail/OEM

No one is being forced to run Win
No one is being forced to use office . Use the free alternatives & work around issues that may pop up with them
Make the choice, then take some responsibility for that choice .

And it is MS's intellectual property. They can do what ever they want with it. They can re-release Win95 if they want to.
Thats their choice

You can choose not not use any of it.

Philosophical issues aside, this last update that so enraged me has also degraded my computer in very material ways. I notice now that booting is much, much slower than it was and performance also seems laggy. I am going to try to restore it prior to the upgrade. I would love to put Windows 7 on it, but I am terrified of not being able to find drivers. Unlike some people, I don't think that being a user of Windows should also have to mean being a full-time tweaker of Windows.

Windows 10 has destroyed my Surface Pro which Microsoft itself builds. It's never worked decently task bar isn't working currently.

I've been wondering lately if I could revert to 8, by just starting over with my old Win 8 disc? Not sure if the license would work, since I've upgraded... Any tips would be appreciated.

Far too many niggly problems for me, I've still got a Start menu which works when it feels like it, a Search button which requires about five hits to get it to work, a calculator which works sometimes even though it should be a simple and reliable built-in tool, and a calendar which says it's Good Friday next week -- on Thursday.

My little tablet is just as flaky, sure, it is low-end, but I'm pretty sure that Win 8 was a lot more stable and bug-free.

The main reason why I'd like to revert is to get back a 10-year-old tool which I rely on, and no longer works. I don't blame MS for that though.

I loved Windows 8, and I expected 10 to be at least as great, maybe more so, but I've been constantly annoyed and disappointed.
