benokobi: Windows 10 has destroyed my Surface Pro which Microsoft itself builds. It's never worked decently task bar isn't working currently.

Search bar, start menu or any of the slide in from the rights even show up.

The only thing that is annoying me is the update stuff. Full screen popovers and the forced restart can GTFO.

The latest build that I installed yesterday fixed the Systry display problems. One thing that erks me is that Win 10 fails to recognize the default printer if you print to another one. Restart the PC and go to do a print and it goes to the last printer used and the printer / device area shows that last printer as the new default printer.

I am frustrated that with every new build of windows that gets installed, Windows removes my custom resolution on one of my screens.

Yup more and more I find myself looking at a design element or feature thinking "What were they thinking!?". It's very frustrating.

Yup more and more I find myself looking at a design element or feature thinking "What were they thinking!?". It's very frustrating.

we changed the default, based on feedback.

Please put the feedback that you hate this into the Windows Feedback tool, or vote up other feedback saying the same thing.

Also this is straight forward to change using the settings, or can by set automatically by GPO/registry etc

I suspect that they do live in a different world where computers are used quite differently. Everything they do is hooked into a corporate environment and they often don't own computers for purely personal user or use them configured totally independently of their corporate role. So they don't have settings that only apply at home or outside of work.

That's why making the last printer used the default is fine because they are used to using different corporate printers at different corporate locations. The printer they are most likely to use next is then the one that they last used. I bet most of them don't even have a printer that they own because it is easier to use the corporate systems.

I also suspect that's why Windows Update is such a pain. Microsoft developers don't have to put up with low bandwidth. Quite possibly, they aren't having to run their systems at maximum performance so they don't realise that updates shouldn't run automatically if their is a significant performance hit. That's probably why they don't think to provide more useful and usable options for the rest of us. Windows should never restart my system without my permission.

Interestingly on the PC I'm using now, it always prints to the last printer used, and the PC is running Win7. So it seems there is not a lot new about that feature. Nice to see that Win10 gives the option of last printer or default. For my use (home office/personal) I print to 2 printers, 2 different pdf printers and Fineprint. When I'm printing say a dozen invoices to pdf, I pretty glad I don't have to reselect the printer everytime. Different horses, different courses.

On update I completely agree. This PC runs simulation which load the Xenon processor to 80% capacity, runs 24/7 and some of the simulations can take over 400 hours. The last thing I want is OS upgrades stuffing those up. The simulations need to be manually shutdown and then the updates applied. However doesn't Win10 allow this anyway? Both my 2 laptops run Win10, and I have them set to "Notify to schedule restart". As far as I'm aware they will not apply the updates unless I tell them to.

Yes yes and yes! @nathan: The forced updates suck! Everyone hates them! They are the reason I have gone back to Windows 7 (which has its own issues, of course). Pass that on to the designers.

Other things: It is a fair point that Windows is focused on corporate clients, but a lot of private users also have it (no choice, if you buy a new computer) and Microsoft knows that perfectly well. They also badly need to take a look at things from that perspective, which historically they never have.

One of my computers is for streaming only and is hooked into my media system. Whenever it is on, it is in use. When it is not in use, it is not on. That is how I set it up and that is how I want it. I do not want it breaking into a film I am watching (or recording!) to download an update or pop up a pointless message saying that it is going to when the scheduled moment arrives. So I am using Windows 7, with updates firmly off. The thing Microsoft doesn't seem to get is that people want the freedom to make their own choices, even if they are the 'wrong' ones. From the days of MS-DOS, Microsoft has been trying to channel its customers into behaviours that it thinks are the correct ones. It really needs to move past that.

There are so many I wouldn't know where to start. One from the old days was memory management. Windows was the worst possible option for that and it was the first tweak everyone did. One that has driven me crazy through many Windows versions and still does, is the insistence on opening all windows as dinky little postage stamps. Fortunately that is now easier to overcome than it used to be but it still annoys. I want my windows to open full-screen every time. If I then want to shrink them, I can do it myself. It would take days to list everything and it's hard to keep the bugs separate from the features. I guess there's nothing wrong with having defaults. But there need to be readily-accessible alternatives for those of use who don't like the defaults. Every version of Windows I have had has required multiple hacks (and I mean real hacks) to get it to perform the way it should have in the first place except the option to change the setting wasn't included. Most recent? I have given up on Win 10 for the moment, but the shortcuts in Win 7 that everyone says should be there are not, at least not on two of my computers, and Windows refuses to remember the one audio mixer setting I need it to so I have to use an AHK script to work around that. If Microsoft ever produces a self-driving car, I'm sure it will go over the first cliff it sees.
