I'll be moving there with my family (assuming nothing goes wrong with a house purchase), in a few months' time.

Wow first person I've come across that's moving to Wanganui instead of moving away.

I'm up there a few times a year visiting my mum.

My wife is from there, she says it's not the hole it was when she was a teenager. Her parents (who can provide free childcare) live there. Houses are affordable, unlike Wellington where we live at present, and any of the ones we've been interested in have UFB available. Plus I've convinced my employer to let me work remotely, and a friend I did CompSci with at VUW many years ago lives there and is keen to find some shared office space. So it's pretty much win-win.

That's debatable :) There's still very little to do but if it's the quiet life you're after then you'll get it in spades there.

Lol, my inlaws are born and raised Whanganui, so I'm over there fairly regularly.

Weird City in that's it's one of two halves IMO. It's got some great creative people and very cool physical features : hills, rivers, beaches, lakes etc. Very close to the mountain for skiing. But it's also got a huge low wealth, education, poverty type component too.

Most places are what you make of it, and there's certainly a lot on offer. It's got a great sports and recreation scene, especially for little kids. Our youngest played soccer there at the weekends and it's cool to see the community vibe and involvement in activities such as this. The markets by the waterfront are much better than say Palmerston North etc, which is a bigger city.

I'm never 100% comfortable there if I'm honest. Given the layout the city should be much better than it is IMO.

Hey my farther is the one overseeing the UFB project for the council XD thought illd throw that in.
But yeah Wanganui is more affordable to live in but in tearms of job prospects, unless you are a meat worker, a teacher or want to spend the rest of your life in retail, there is not much here.

Grew up there, visit occasionally. Hole with fibre is probably an ok description, lots of poor people, but it'd depend on who you know as there are some professionals there. I wouldn't want to live there though. I've never found great places to eat, but there are some ok ones. Cheaper to live there though, but if you lose your current job you'd have trouble finding another, especially in tech.

Tell me about it. I graduated from my 3 year corse last year. The onley thing I can find here that is even remotely in my interests is voltear work at the local intel computer clubhouse.

Friends & I tried building a community wifi network in Wellington back in the day but it never got off the ground because there are too many hills between pockets of geeks. I'd love to try that again but need to make friends with people with a view on one of the hills... don't suppose you'd know anyone? The gear is way cheaper than it was in 2004.

What counts as your interests? General IT stuff?

Lol no I don't know anyone, that is why I am here for to find more people like me here in Wanganui. Well I do know some people that live on the hills. And one of them may be interested but he's more of my parents friend then mine.

my intrists lie with most forms of digital technology (so teck head not gear head)
I also enjoy animating, playing video games. I have even tryed making lestplays for YouTube.
Done some programing but the Onley one I have decent knolage in is actionscript 2 ( yep I know it's not even 3)
Did some vb in high school but making an bmi calulator is not realey mutch of an accomplishment XD
I am also interested in java. I decided I might try learn it through making mods with mincraft. There are lots of tutorials out there for mc related stuff. And it gives me an environment to test the code in. However the 1.6 mc update has created a bit of a problem in tearms of setting up the workspace.

And yeah. Oh I also do computer graphic design stuff. Like postproduction video editing, 3D modelling and want to get in to the visual onscreen interface design. I studded computer graphic design because I wanted to get in to game design.

I live an hour's drive away in Palmerston North. People love to knock Wanganui, and PN as well. I don't mind either city.

I live in Palmerston North also, but seriously Whanganui knocks itself.

Gang Patch laws that aren't legal.
Sewage systems designed and implemented on the cheap, resulting in the whole town smelling like sht for months.
Not knowing how to spell its own name.
