We were about to book a holiday house seen on holidayhouses.co.nz

Turns out these guys cater for local and international.
So they have a business website and one must release credit card details with the terms along the lines of

We authorise you to bill for any damages caused to the property or chattel during our stay.

I think I'm going to book a hotel. How many here thinks it will be fine?

The hotel will want a credit card for the same reason.

That's pretty standard for any type of accommodation. Most hotels/apartments require a credit card imprint, it's for that reason (or incidentals eg. mini bar which you forget to declare on check out)

That's just one specific house/bach and it is likely because they've been burnt in the past. If you really aren't confortable with giving them those details, just book a different one, if there is another.

Why would you have an issue with this. In the reverse situation I am pretty sure it's exactly what you would expect.

Hotels, Motels usually take an imprint of your CC for incidentals.

Same. No issues. It's pretty standard for most accommodation bookings these days. Any disputes regarding incorrect billing if not resolved with the vendor can be easily escalated with via the credit card company.

One thing I do however with the book or rent a batches is take a video or photos of the place as soon as we arrive to detail any mess or damage as evidence it was existing. Might be a bit over the top but I am a big fan of covering my butt.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

You got protection from your bank should anything happen, otherwise I don't have issue with it and pretty standard. I have not experienced any of that issue personally either.

Internet is my backyard...

But they don't have unlimited access to your funds. If they charge you fraudulently, you contact your credit card company and it's sorted.

Are you using credit card or charge card?

If you're using credit card - which is not unlimited, you're protected.

No business will purposely do fraudulent transactions as this can affect the business long term.

If it is operated as a business, which it sounds like it is, then their excess might by $5K or $10K...

And why should they have to take a hit on their insurance policy (or an out of pocket loss!) from intentional damage caused by someone staying there.

I could also be to charge a clean fee to if the person staying there was meant to clean and didn't.

Try thinking of it from their point of view - they have a huge lot more to lose from the booking than you do!!

During your stay you are expected to take good care of the villa / holiday homes and the chattels therein.
In the event of the villa or any of the chattels therein being lost or damaged during your stay through any act or omission by you or any of your visitors, you hereby authorise and direct us to debit the credit card, particulars of which have been given to us for tariff payment purposes & incidental charges, with the cost of repairing such damage or replacing such items.

I have decided not to go with them
