I'm thinking of buying a new mobile (dual sim Huawei P20 Pro) and neither the colour I want (Twighlight) nor the dual SIM model is available via 'normal' channels in NZ (unfortunately - I think it would have sold very well) but it is available via a couple of websites. The one with the least dodgy looking brand is DS.

Is DS a safe place to purchase from these days?

The brand name Dick Smith was purchased by a totally different company, so the previous fiasco has nothing to do with how it might be now.

And may take a week or more to get here before being potentially nabbed by customs.

I was going to get one there a couple of weeks ago. But by the time you take getting a tax refund and your legal duty to then declare and pay for it again. The saving was negligible

I didn't however think there was a difference with being dual between locations. Interesting

Got my current phone from Dick Smith a Moto G5 great price ordered Thursday arrived Tuesday. It was an international version they sourced from China. Had a Chinese plug in box but Dicks supply NZ/Oz plug with it. Make sure if it has full 4g bands if you live rural.

No local warranty or CGA cover. Import duty and GST to pay. Not worth the risk And posssibly won’t save that much anyway IMO.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I've bought a couple of low priced items (Anker batteries worth $100 etc) and they have been fine.

Haven't had to claim warranty.

According to their Trade Me listing, there are no fees to pay on top of the listing price.

It's not about saving money, per se, but the fact that neither the colour nor the dual sim models are available other than from parallel import type places. If the colour/model were available like normal, I would just do that for sure. I may still do that, in fact, and just get one of the only two colours we are being allowed.

The reason I got the Moto from dick was it was $50 cheaper and had 32gb internal storage instead of 16gb being offered locally.

If Dick Smith provide warranty for you, that would be great.

Otherwise, you will be on your own risk to use a foreign version of the device and couldn't find official channel to repair it when it gets problems.

It says that it comes with 2 years Huawei warranty but I don't know what Huawei NZ would do if asked to repair a phone sold in NZ that was technically an overseas unit?

I presume products sold by DS through a New Zealand website also have CGA protection regardless.

You actually get a better view when doing some digging on Kogan.

The P20 (non pro) is an international unlocked import model - per the banner on the info page

The PRO, is an au specific version with dual sim. https://consumer.huawei.com/au/phones/p20-pro/specs/ Probably why most the stores and JB only had the pro in stock when I looked :)

Vs https://consumer.huawei.com/nz/phones/p20-pro/specs/ which is the non dual. BOOOOO

Unless the 4G network there (6 bands?) differs to 'global' again?!?! Or is it regional update tree specific..

I thought their pricing included NZ GST when purchased. I think this discussion has been had here before.

Edit. Looks like they now don't do GST and you have to pay it here.
