Hi. Not sure where I should post this – so trying here. I have a problem where I am truly a wannabee geek. I use utorrent but have only limited success in setting it up to get the best results – in theory I have a good fast connection but am getting disappointing results and think that I have got as far as I can with my limited technical knowledge. I would happily pay for set up but does anyone know a tech who knows about torrent configuration? I’m in West Auckland. Or is this a no no for techs coz of the fact that it is P2P file sharing?

You left the most important information out: who is your provider? Have you done port forward on your router? Have you configured any software firewall to allow the ports you need open? And so on...

Just to clarify: P2P file sharing is not illegal if the files you are sharing are NOT copyright protected.

Post a recent result of your Speedtest.net tests to start.

Further clarification: even file sharing of copyrighted files is not illegal if you have permission to distribute the files.

Other things to take note of: how many seeds and peers are there on the torrent?
Is it connecting successfully to a tracker (check in the Trackers tab)?
What does uTorrent show as the status indicator for the torrent (green, blue, red)?
Is the port forwarding working? Check by going to Options->Speed Guide, click "Test if port is forwarded properly".

I've just got the "Next Best Thing" #3 plan from Slingshot today. I am getting a tech in tomorrow coz I'm having some problems with the connection of my main computer at the mo - so I will post speed tests after that is sorted - hopefully tomorrow. I have sorted port forward on my modem - so get a green light for my utorrent. The only firewall i use is the windows firewall - which I will double check re the port tomorrow and let you know.

Lets be realistic here, would it be safe to assume that > 95% of all content that is torrented is copyrighted?

In reply to the original poster, your post is within the FUG as you are having problems with the technology. If you asked about a particular torrent or trying to get a particular torrent that was an illegal copy, then we would hide your post.

Although I agree with you that a lot of the content that is transferred through P2P is in breach of its own copyright terms, we cannot legally say he will be breaching any terms until it is proven that he is indeed transferring copyrighted material (and by that, I mean content that should not be transferred by any P2P means). That takes us back to guilty upon accusation.

What I said was merely that he should not be afraid of asking just because it is related to P2P. I have, for example, transferred many torrents at work that were completely legal (Ubuntu ISOs anyone?).

So while I see your side, I do ask you not to generalize and do not quote my post to make it seem misleading.

But in short: yes, we can assume what you are saying is true but we cannot go as far as denying him the knowledge of knowing the 'whys' and the 'hows'.

That is weird. A friend of mine is on Slingshot here in Auckland and he gets insane torrent speeds (300kb/s avg). I'm on Orcon+ however, and it does sometimes look like dial-up.

Different exchanges with different policies?

300kb is not insane torrent speed, thats my avg as my distance from the exchange limits me to 3000mb speed if i could get the speeds others get i would be getting more no problem and that is at all times of the day. it is just Slingshot slowing them down

It is when you're stuck with 100KB/s across multiple torrent downloads.

It might be interesting to note, though, that he gets 300KB/s PER TORRENT, and so far I saw 4 downloading at the same time at those speeds. 300KB/s probably limited by XP half-open connections limit (I don't think he patched it).

I haven't seen anyone doing 1.8MB/s on torrents here in NZ yet, so excuse me if my standards are somewhat low. Back in Brazil, though, is a whole 'nother story.

again i would think you can but i can never find out unless i move house , but if i download two at a time it just splits the 300kb to 150 -170 each, again limited by the speed of my connection and to get those top speeds (1.8mbs)your upload would have to be really quick

Friend of mine lives in the city and has ADSL2+. I saw his downloading at 1.7MB/s total.

I've had some single downloads going at 300-400kB/s on ADSL1.

In the status bar there should be a coloured icon, is it a green tick or a red or yellow cross?

You can use the Ubuntu 9.04 release as a good well seeded legitimate test torrent:

Well that was a fun test. I didn't want to d/l the whole thing, but it hit 1.4Mbps pretty soon after starting. Nice! :)

Not necessarily. Most torrents are not capped by the upload speed. Nearing the end of my data cap, I'm usually setting my upload speeds to 5KB/s to avoid getting charged extra, and download speeds are unaffected.
