Hi

I am helping a friend out with a security installation at his business.

He has gone low budget and is using webcams, although they are full HD and the picture quality is good.

He is going to have 8 cameras in total, all coming into the one main PC. I am looking for some software to use and have found a few:

http://www.webcamxp.com/home.aspx
http://www.zoneminder.com/
jaxcam

I haven't tried the top two yet but have tried jaxcam. It works great apart from it doesn't have the ability to view/record in widescreen so some of the picture is cut off. Also the cameras come with 4 different recording modes from 360p to full HD and jaxcam seems to only be able to access the 360p.

Does anyone know of other software that would be good for this?

Also a few questions regarding the hardware. We have all 8 cameras coming into the PC, my friend got advice from PB tech but i'm not sure they were totally correct.

They have sold him a P4 3.0Ghz PC as they said the CPU will hardly be used at all, but i think if we want to compress the video to any sort of reasonable size for constant recording we will need a very powerful CPU?

My other concern is whether we will hit issues with trying to write that much data to a sata disk at once, can it actually handle that much?

Cheers
Jarrad

I have seen: http://www.argusurveillance.com/info.php?ref=purchase and it seems pretty good - motion activated recording saves disk space.

You may be able to ask them for a demo.

How is he getting 8 USB camera cables back to the PC?

I've used one called Vitamin D which was very good - the version that supports unlimited cameras costs $199 though so a tad pricey.

Ooops forgot to reply to this thread.

I am looking at the links you added now, thanks.

Most of the cameras are in a short area of the PC so we are using 3-5m USB cables.

The other cameras further away we are using Ethernet extensions.

are you referring to this: http://www.ubnt.com/airvision

If so we already have all the cameras and computers, just looking for the software solution to go with them.

AirVision is still in it's infancy. Cool software, but the existing cameras are still pretty low spec.
