This pretty much sums it up for me. Get good grades, go to uni to get Quals for a good job (and a student loan!) start at the bottom and eventually get the good job but any savings have been used to pay off the student loan, so almost mid way thru life and still getting nowhere.

Getting the real good jobs is ultimately about who you know and not what experience and quals you have...

In this "rock star economy" the majority of us are still struggling just to survive, the ever increasing cost of housing and fuel and food...

"I love this National Government so much, they make me so happy every day!" said NO ONE EVER...

10 years working behind a bar and then he decides he wants more, sounds like he wasted a lot of time initially. He could of been gaining other qualifications part time study etc. And I think he needed to research his potential field of work before doing degree he did.

LOL, the whole tin foil hat \ conspiracy theory label does get a bit tired and overused. Its human nature to question and seek truth.

The article is a bit light on facts - firstly, although it says he got his degree, it doesn't say what his grades were like. While it may be true that "Cs get degrees", they don't tend to get you good jobs. Secondly, even if the grades were good, he needs to have a coherent mix of the right papers from an employers perspective. Thirdly, he may have to face that many industries want more than a basic degree these days, even ones with good grades. For many employers now it's more a case of honours being required to even be considered for short-listing, and at least masters preferred. Particularly for what is in essence an older grad, without directly relevant experience, executing a non-standard career change. He should really consider going back for an honours year - assuming his grades are good enough.

I have personally seen recruitment processes where any CVs that were below honours level got immediately discarded unread, as the first cut of the short-listing process.

I enjoyed that article. It was above average for that kind of thing. Even so it contained a lot of unsubstantiated claims because professor x said kind of thing. For example the article repeatedly claims that a professor said the CIA invented the term conspiracy theory to supress alternative explanations for JFK, but nothing more than that.

Well, they make me and my wife happy every day. Heck, I am a card-carrying National Party member.

It's not the government's role to find work for people. If you can't find what you want here, go some place else for a while - the world is a pretty big place. You'll learn a lot, get great experience and bring marketable skills home to NZ in due course.

The daily struggle to afford the basics is partly due to inequality, but it's also a manifestation of the reality that the world's resources are not coping with over-population. Gradually reducing birth rates over the next couple of generations is an important part of the solution, but no government will ever support that because it's not politically expedient for politicians to tell people not to have kids. It's seen as "too pessimistic".

The best (reason to believe most reliable) projections say the population will peak around 9-11 billion. It would be sensible to plan for that. It isn't a big deal. Don't panic.

Birth rates tend to reduce as societies become more educated and women are empowered to make their own reproductive choices. This process is well underway already.

There certainly seem to be parts of NZ society where this is not what I would describe as 'underway'!

It's never been easier to set up a small business in NZ
It's never been easier to trade anything
It's never been easier or cheaper to purchase almost everything (healthy food, seeds, cars, tools, electronic goods, clothes, travel, etc etc). Electricity & houses are the outliers here, and anyone with half a clue knows that is due to restrictive planning & labour laws, and the theft of Electricity Co profits for welfare bribes by the last Labour Govt.
It has never been easier or cheaper to access information & knowledge abut health, contraception, careers, etc.
NZ has never spent so much on or tried to explore so many options around education - from ECE to Partnership Schools, Alternative academies, measurement of results etc, etc.. almost every initiative blocked or sabotaged by politically aligned interest groups.
There is apparently almost no country in the world where it is as easy to arrive with nothing, and become financially comfortable or even wealthy by the sweat of one's brow, or brain.
There are very few countries where the ability to feed your family by fishing, hunting, gathering, raising, growing is less than ours.
There are very few countries where to many people it is ok to be publicly funded to incite murder of the PM & rape of his daughter, yet it is scandalous to use a skinny mannequin to display clothes, or to use the word gay in humour.
Go figure what's really wrong with NZ....
