One more night of bang bang bang and I think I am going to change sides. I am rarely in favour of banning things but it seems fireworks are munter magnets.
Be interesting to see how tonight and the weekend goes...pretty quiet last night I think due to the cold weather. Don't think we should get into permits and all that just limit to one day, that will pretty much kill the madness of going for months on end to to a large degree. I think most Australian states have a permit system for obvious reasons, so hard don't think many would bother unless it's a wedding or something special.
..forgot to mention, the position of our house up higher than a cul-de-sac below means we get it pretty loud from those below....we are so close to the explosion! Man it was bad about 3 years ago...must of been just one house down there I suspect....I drove down trying to figure it out one night was so mad...lol.

I'd be real happy if they banned the noisiest explosions which cause most of the disturbance. Banning crackers got rid of most of the noise but it seems to be coming back stronger partly because the Boom Boxes and the like are such good sellers.
We had a great night with 20+ people on Wednesday night in Wellington. The weather was cold but the wind and rain stopped so we had the best night in years. The overcast sky meant it was darker earlier. The vegetation was wet so there was no fire hazard even when one of the guys placed a large box on its side and it shot across the back lawn. We had a bubble machine blowing bubbles through the fireworks too, magical. Long may it last.

Being below houses has its drawbacks too. Most of the worst offenders in our area are up a hill, over the road from us. They protect us superbly from the prevailing northerlies but they do tend to angle their explosives out and over the road, not really thinking of where any material, burning or otherwise, will land.
Fireworks are ostensibly for kids entertainment right? I'd be happy to see sparklers and those quiet candle type fireworks that just spout colourful, non-exploding bits available any time of the year to be honest, be great for kids b'days, but lets gets serious on the noisy ones. Those are the ones that keep people up and spook the animals.

They started last night about the same time too.
Makes you wonder if anyone sleeps in this town.
I trust those people who don't support a ban are sleeping peacefully away right?
But, I expect this for the next 6 months or so, going by previous years.
You must live in Palmerston North too then eh? Every night since they went on sale someone has started up around 11:45pm. It's Monday night for heavens sake (well, it was) and the noise here stopped at 2am. All is quiet now.
Just for the suffering they cause animals every year, I'm in favour of a ban. A man at the end of our street has lost one of his cats because of the fireworks. I hope his cat returns.
We had the best bonfire and fireworks night last Saturday. Been doing it with about 6 other families at our place (rural) for the past 4 years. Great fun and the kids love it, really love it. I would not be in favour of a ban at all. I used to be involved with approving fireworks for sale in NZ and this involved testing them to regulation. The best display I ever witnessed was the burning of 90 tonnes of fireworks that didn't make the cut. Every year people get injured by them and we would sometimes investigate. The boss at the time was sick of having to placate little injured Johnnies Mum and would have like to see a ban, but could also see the other side of it. Unfortunately the loud minority in this country often spoil what is fun for everyone else.
Yes rural is much more fun...big bon fires and such, we used to have when I was a lad. I think "Saturdayising" the celebration day and that day only would be a good compromise. Everyone knows when it's going to happen and can lock pets away etc.
I definitely don't want them banned, responsible people who use them should not be punished for the munters out there but I think 2 simple things would make the the majority of the anti fireworks people happy.
Restricting them to peoples private property and no fireworks to be let off after 10.30pm.
That would deal with the majority of the complaints.
As for the animals/pets - keep them inside, they are your responsibility. If your cat runs away, its your fault not the fireworks, 5 November happens every year. I have 2 cats, I kept them inside for the night and they are fine. Its not rocket science.

That's the point, in some areas there is fireworks on the 4th, 5th, then the weekend that follows on Friday, Saturday & Sunday....then the odd sporadic ones throughout the year (new years eve is understandable, but not random whenever time).
