I'm convinced that my local Countdown employs someone to squeeze all packs of chips and break them before they go on the shelves.

We don't buy chips but fresh, bagged bread always gets squeezed out its rectangular cross-section if we don't ensure it's protected during checkout.

That's a pet hate. I don't grab and squeeze bread...I don't expect a checkout operator to do it either.

I spent >$300 at Countdown last night and handed the bags over to the checkout operator prior to filling the conveyor belt.

The bags got pushed to the end of the counter, where my goods were simply piled on top of them. While I was trying to feverishly fill bags and load them into the trolley, the checkout operator just kept on piling the remaining goods on top of each other and the bags.

My wife laughs at me but I always load items on to the conveyor in the order that in want them packed into bags. Dairy with dairy, veg with veg, pantry items together, laundry items together, heaviest items first followed by lighter items, meat separated from everything else. It takes me all of about 30secs more to pre-sort them but the result is much less damage and less chance of product spoilage if something leaks.

I deeply dislike supermarkets. My wife knows it. She does the shopping and I only visit a supermarket if it's not the weekend and it's an emergency. I dislike the people who block aisles, people who take forever to find their cards to pay - even though they could have done it while the checkout operator was ringing the items - I dislike the whole thing.

A follow-on from this thread, that pretty much every single systemic insecticide and fungicide ever available in NZ has gradually been withdrawn from sale to the public, so now when your plants are being attacked by aphids or sooty mold you're expected to spray them with organic lemon-scented vegan mung bean oil which does absolutely nothing apart from perhaps feeding the fungus/aphids.

If there's any rural/agricultural folks on here who have functional agricultural insecticide/fungicide and can send me a small quantity of it, PM me...

And the reason for that is the scan rate KPI they have, which is recorded for the operator in the POS system and sent to management, and if it is too low, they get a talking too - or was like that 10 years ago.

I do the same.

I shopped at New World for a couple of years and found that the staff had a tendency to overload my bags. Since moving house I've started shopping at Pak N Save again and I am finding that I prefer to pack my own bags.

I couldnt even find the cheap glyphosphate at bunnings last time. Had to go next door and they had some 1 litre ones of it at a higher price. All brands not at bunnings other than overpriced ready to use stuff that would be gone in 5 mins.

I just get bags for the cold things that have to come in straight away, since by the time I get home I really do not have the energy to deal with handling the groceries for the 4th and 5th times so the non cold things can stay in the car till the next day.

All of our favourite places to eat in Kapiti are no longer wearing masks. Three takeaways, three cafes, two restaurants and one bar.

People in the supermarkets unmasked. People in the shopping mall unmasked.

Anyone coming into our office unmasked is told in no uncertain terms to leave.

No one else gives a toss apparently.

Where are you guys located that supermarkets pack bags for you? I can't actually remember the last time I shopped at a supermarket where the staff packed your bags for you, at least in NZ.

Went into Domino's Pizza in Masterton last night. Large sign on the door stating "No mask, no entry". Judging by the lack of masks, that was neither being adhered to, or enforced.
Another sign on the till stating "Our staff are wearing masks for their protection and yours" - except not a single staff member was.
We voted with our feet, and won't be going back.

try different breeds of veggies. We’ve found the bugs leave the lettuce with purple leaves well alone.

Maybe they know something about them that we don't. Anyone ever seen bugs on oleander, or foxglove?
