joker97: what if, in the survival of the best adapted and strongest, in the past dinosaurs ruled the earth, maybe natural selection is doing its thing? and maybe we are powerless agaisnt it

Are you suggesting that ISIS are the 21st Century equivalent of a good size mountain falling out of the sky? :)

Groups like ISIS have always been around where there is poverty and ignorance to give them a kickstart. Then they simply appeal outwards to that element of humanity who just need to feel they belong and/or want to kill other people because it is fun. The difference these days is the speed and coverage of getting your appeal out. Now that coverage is total and the speed is instant. The amplification of the appeal isn't alone however. It is also the rage generated by slights done to them. Read that as drone strikes, bombing missions etc.

Previously most of them wouldn't have even known that such an event took place. Now sadly the fact that someone the next town over got killed by a drone is in their face instantly and incessantly.
Modern media and the joy we get out of it is sometimes a curse.

A group like ISIS in 1200 AD would've been some angry guys in a bar, and maybe Jeff from the next town over. Now sadly its like the pied piper of Hamelin to every nutjob around. It could be anyone, they are just the flavour of the week. And the Western media is feeding them non-stop.

Slightly off topic (sorry!), but after watching a lot of Aljazeera TV, I wonder WTF they'd have left to report if it wasn't for certain groups committing suicide attacks and other such killings on a daily basis.

You think ISIS is funded by Al Jazeera perhaps? And therefore indirectly by AJ's advertisers?

I found this article informative. It's worth reading if you have the time.

http://www.theatlantic.com/features/archive/2015/02/what-isis-really-wants/384980/

Apparently ISIS really does have something to do with Islam.  Not trying to be funny here, it's just that I've often heard that it has nothing at all to do with Islam and I was grateful for the clarification that the author provided.   Here's an interesting quote:

"But Muslims who call the Islamic State un-Islamic are typically, as the Princeton scholar Bernard Haykel, the leading expert on the group’s theology, told me, “embarrassed and politically correct, with a cotton-candy view of their own religion” that neglects “what their religion has historically and legally required.” Many denials of the Islamic State’s religious nature, he said, are rooted in an “interfaith-Christian-nonsense tradition.”

Well yes Isis is Islamic in the same sense the Klu Klux Klan is Christian. They could swap places and you would hardly notice the difference in approach. Americans should understand the history of their own civil war and the groups that spawned and were supported.

And there are issues with the article's use:

What The Atlantic Left Out About ISIS According To Their Own Expert

"ThinkProgress asked him [Princeton scholar Bernard Haykel] directly whether Islamic texts and theology necessitate the creation of groups like ISIS, he was unequivocal. “No,” he said. “I think that ISIS is a product of a very contingent, contextual, historical factors. There is nothing predetermined in Islam that would lead to ISIS.”"

Not at all. I'm just stating that all these killings by ISIS and other groups like Boko, plus what's going on in the Ukraine occupy a lot of the news on that channel.

joker97:
MileHighKiwi: We can't defeat the idea but we can definitely take down huge numbers of the scum bags in air attacks. It's awesome seeing Jordan unleashing hell after the brutal murder of the Jordanian pilot, but we need other, bigger, countires to get involved and do the same. Are ground troops even required? Can't we just bomb them off the face of the earth?

bomb them? who is them?

These guys congregate in massive numbers all the time, they travel in convoys etc...I'm suggesting an extension of the bombing campaign that is underway already.

are you sure about that?

more like they spend time on facebook twitter and youtube.

and have already infiltrated neighbourhoods and suburbs that you wouldn't want to bomb ... hang on ... did someone mention AKL already ...

My thoughts are leave them to it on the condition they leave western countries alone but make very clear that if a western country is attacked all hell will break loose and we will carpet bomb until there is nothing but craters and ash.

Meh!  It's kind of been proven that approach does not work against that group of people!

"Western" troops are trained to stay alive, work together and follow rules of engagement not to involve non-combatents (mostly), those guys can work alone and are not afraid to blow up themselves, their friends and their family just to get 1 target ... safe in the knowledge their cloud fairy will look after them!

how long was the USSR in Afghanistan ?  And they pretty much gave up trying to win as well!
