Gentleman Jack. A True story based on a Lesbian Land owner in the 1800's England. Brilliantly acted and a really great love story along with what woman went through when they didn't follow societies standards of what a woman should be. a HBO/BBC co-production and worth a watch.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

freitasm: Designated Survivor is back on Netflix and I see they are now using the playbook from Shonda's productions - putting some social commentary in episodes so all the over the top, suspend believe stuff from Seasons 1 and 2 are gone now (just watch some Grey's Anatomy and you will see current social themes).

Will watch episode two to check but the first episode was a bit too over the top with comparisons with real world commentary.

The best, for its time, "upto date Social Commentary" TV series EVER was 'The West Wing' 1999 = 9/10. Nothing IMO has ever beaten that series for upto date Social Commentary. All seven seasons are available on Lightbox, though I have the DVD series.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Yes, but The West Wing started with that premise - from the very first episode, while Designated Survivor had a storyline in the first two seasons and now is just going out like 24 with social commentary.

The West Wing, in my opinion, was one of the greatest series ever. The Newsroom (same Aaron Sorkin producer) was really good too but not at that level - shame it didn't live long though.

Personally, I couldn't even manage to get through S1E1.

There was something so grating, so affectatious about the writing and dialogue that neither I or my wife could cope. Sorkin seems the kind of writer that needs to prove how smart he is, and this comes across laid on so thick... I couldn't see through that to admire the 'social commentary'...

Yeah I've been watching Designated Survivor S3 also - quite disappointed with it to be honest it's gotten a bit soapy and the storylines are all separate - it feels like you're switching between a few different shows every few minutes.

And you're right - it's totally OTT with the virtue signalling - it's almost one long anti-Trump political attack ad.

Not that I'm a particular Trump fan but I don't watch TV to be reminded of real life issues... I watch to be entertained!

First couple of seasons had plenty of action - S3 has just about none. It's not even as if the political stuff is up to House of Cards level either.

Season 1 (9/10), Season 2 (8/10), Season 3 (3/10).

I 100% agree. WW is probably my favourite of all time. I think Sorkin is amazing. I really really loved the Newsroom as well.

I 100% agree. WW is probably my favourite of all time. I think Sorkin is amazing. I really really loved the Newsroom as well.

I don't get the love for the Newsroom. Sorkin feels the need to channel his bitterness towards things he doesn't understand (eg the internet) through his shows. When he writes with a lighter touch his stuff is charming and very entertaining. When he lays the "everyone else is stupid" attitude it makes his shows not at all entertaining.

IMO level of dumb preaching and mansplaining on the Newsroom and Studio 60 were why they failed.

Well that and they were about a sketch comedy show that wasn't funny and a news organisation that could flick it's fingers and break stories that could never be broken in the time frames they proposed. Even a cursory look at the deepwater horizon story made it look pretty dumb.

I was pleasantly surprised. I binge watched the entire season one.
