Despite the 600k+ kiwis living in Aus, this would be fantastic asset to our citizenship. Even the brits are polling yes, not often that happens. Of course Key doesnt want it happening, who is going to pay for his housing bubble in Auckland that they have done nothing to resolve. He will be left alone in Parnell with his own properties nose diving. On a serious note I think its a great idea, not that I need it to move to any of these countries but to broaden the minds of a lot more kiwis stuck in this concept that milk will save NZ.

ill try to do it again if i get the time but its pretty easy to mock up in any paint programme.. i only spent 30 minutes on it. the problem with the fern imprint/different hex is it is quite fine at parts, unlike the candadian maple which is thick. so a silver fern repeated across the green fauna tri colour i dont think works well. it really needs black and white imo. the fern frond/Koru on the other hand works quite well but traditionally this is black and white and my concept is a not a representation of people but of the country, white, green, black tri stripe. again the tri stripe, land of the long white cloud, green of our canopy, black of our volcanic mineral rich land.

i think you are making assumptions they would even consider living in Auckland. why would anyone of sane mind spend millions to retire in auckland when they can live in prettier/quieter parts of NZ for a fraction? the money driving the market is/was overseas investors into empty homes and auckland workers chasing that vertical line of property growth (ie greed) and inaction from our government to burst it, in fact the reverse happened. give retirees some credit. auckland exists because of jobs. 60 years ago maybe a combination of jobs and lifestyle, but now its simply a lack of foresite to push business and employment either to satellite cites or other cities. i think some aucklanders think everyone who invests in auckland really actually wants to live there, thats just laughable.

keep in mind this is "work rights" being discussed.

No assumptions on my part, nor any mention of overseas retirees moving to Auckland

But if you allowed free movement of people between these countries, I think you'd have a staggering amount of people selling in UK (and possibly Canada but I don't know much about real estate there) and moving to provincial NZ. The sale cost of a nice baby-boomer's house in many UK cities, towns and villages would set you up in a dream house in NZ, along with better weather, fewer crowds etc etc. But the effect on NZ property prices would be huge

I also think you're underestimating the attractions of Auckland. For me, it's the best city I can think of to live in - not for the city itself but for the combination of the city, the coastline and the climate.

Like what? Nothing you get in Auckland you cant get elsewhere for less, much, much less. Auckland exists due to its harbour, hence its commerce, hence its jobs. Lets say they had put Auckland on the Kaipara like they had planned way back when... Would you still feel the same about the Kaipara?

I think Hauraki Gulf is a wonder but its been trashed. Aucklands coastline is shocking. Our Fauna and Flora lags well behind other regions. So Im still trying to figure out what Im underestimating having grown up there but have lived elsewhere in NZ and seen what a more than 1 city country has to offer.

And when you say best, I assume you mean in NZ, because I can think of some towns in Cornwall UK that are as Picturesque and at 32 degrees in summer last time i visisted were not as cold as most kiwis expect. With coastlines matching anything on our westcoast.

yep mine were similar. I like the first one. But that second one has potential too imo. As I say though until its a flag it might change how it looks that why I think the simplicity of the first design makes that potential a lot easier to imagine. I had the fern and or Koru as a motif in a different green shade/hex, I didnt change the straight edges.

I am a loyal Wellingtonian however I agree Auckland is fantastic, the coast especially north to Whangaparaoa is spectacular. The harbours are great.

I'm a keen sailor. There is nowhere else in NZ that even comes close to Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf as a place to enjoy cruising sailing. I don't know what you mean by "trashed" and "shocking" - the Hauraki Gulf and surrounding coastlines are for the most part in excellent condition.

And another incorrect assumption - I meant in the world, not in NZ. I lived in SW England for 22 years and migrated from there to Auckland. I would never go back. The weather is mediocre at best for most of the year, decent beaches are incredibly crowded when the weather isn't dreadful and property in decent places is shockingly expensive for what you get. And it's my favourite part of the UK!

There has been a vast reduction of shore and seabed life around the Auckland coastal area. Talk to someone who is familiar with the area from 40 yrs ago to get a better picture. There are many issues each with a different cause some of which are being addressed and some not at all. Also Google 'Kina Barren' symptom of depletion of top level predators in that particular case.

Voted to keep the existing, the new flag looks more like an all blacks promotional flag and a bit ugly.

Was speaking to someone the other day and they said they liked the united tribes flag, which I'd heard about but not seen.

I like it , has a bit of history behind it too and represents maori and pakeha. Although, with the mass chinese/indian immigration into nz , maybe there should be elements of their cultures too.

Ultimately Auckland, the largest city, will be a chinese majority city in the far future so why not?

I actually really like this, especially the plain stripes (though I think a professionally done Koru effect could look really good too). It's a classic three-bar flag, but with interesting colours that seem unique, and I actually feel like they do a good job of conveying a sense of New Zealand.

The problem with it is that the white stripe is on the border, meaning it blends into a white background. However the Russians seem to live with that flaw ok...

Yeah - I spent literally less than three minutes on this, and that included knocking both samples up in PowerPoint, saving them as .png files, uploading them to GZ, and putting them in the post!

But I agree - the three bars (horizontal or vertical) is a classic of vexillology and pretty much always looks good. Usually if there is a white or yellow stripe this would go between the two colours instead of at one end. This is inherited from the rules of heraldry where yellow and white represent gold and silver, and normal practice is to separate two colours with a "metal", e.g the flags of Belgium, Egypt, France, India or the Netherlands. Of course there are a number of flags that break this rule already, e.g. Bulgaria, Cameroon, Germany and Russia, so why not one more?
