yep i like it too and it took me less than 2 minutes to think of the colours and their meanings behind the tri stripes. flags dont have to be complicated to mean something. i agree about the plain stripes being better and thats why i didnt like the fern imprints in the green stripe when i did it. i think it would have looked odd as a flag.

as for auckland, im not saying its not great, im saying it should not be the only city in NZ (there are equally beautiful areas in NZ to live and work) because its devastating to such a beautiful fragile area when so many beautiful areas exist. the devastation its had to the coastal fauna and flora is gut wrenching let alone the sea bed. so whilst i appreciate it is so lovely to someone who has immigrated already and has a property in Auckland for me personally its looks the opposite. you look at how much trash is on our beaches and its just accepted, people often just walk bye a plastic bottle instead of picking it up and carrying it to the bin or even worse all the way home simply because it isnt "theirs".

id hardly be worried about retirees in auckland from overseas if you think auckland beaches are nice when they find sydney and its surrounding areas. proper surf beaches with white sand not mud ;-p

anyway this is pointless trying to convince those that have immigrated to the destruction having one city in NZ has made if you hadnt seen it prior. take a look at the resident species of crayfish and snapper at goat island for instance, the lowest ever recorded. of course their can be vast reasons for biodiversity, but my point is its what you cant see thats even scarier.

what do you think happened to all the sediment to make upper reaches of auckland or if we drill through the seabed... (although im all for north shore rail link not some half done job)

is the price of "auckland is nice" and ill enjoy it while im around worth it to the generations to follow? im talking sustainability.

and the point is the link is about working visas. which personally id never move to a city where rent is substantially cheaper and then buy a house. so i dont think we have much to worry about there.

anyway this is totally off point back to whether the flag should change and why.

Boo Hiss. We have an English flag yay. Who cares about a NZ flag, the minority. We should be taught the English accent. Its all about the Commonwealth, forget our identity.

Way off topic, as we are an English country, not NZ. Is anyone going to be selling the NZ flag? I will buy as I'm a kiwi

I think the sentiment is that majority want change, but of that majority, the majority do not want the beach towel.

I'll buy. Im not a young trendy, I grew up with the Queen, and of the many times I've been to the US I enjoy their patriotism. Can't do that with an English flag. Beach towels? Meh, thats just a weak way to diss it. I'm wondering how many "new" flags will, be flown???

I heard they could only afford the Red Peak flag.

im just annoyed that a lot of people just voted for the old flag as a vote against Key, i find that petty for what was an important referendum.

I agree. Im biased as I wanted a Kiwi flag, but your right, who voted for the old and new flag and who voted politically? Stuff it, I want to fly a Kiwi flag, and I will.

A new flag would've been great, but unfortunately the alternative was childish and embarrassing.

I didn't necessarily vote for the current flag, I just couldn't in good conscious vote for that other thing.

I voted for the new flag despite disliking John Key and his policies.

Politicians come and go - flags last much longer.

The current British Empire / NZ flag was designed in 1869 and introduced in 1902.

So what do you say about all those that voted for change just to support Key? Anything at all?

The British Empire no longer exists, and hasn't for something like 50+ years.
