Basically the alternative design sucked and was weak . I think if the design was good, a new flag would have been voted in. A new flag is not going to fix nzs problems., so whether we have a new flag or not really makes little difference to most people lives.

I voted for the new flag despite disliking John Key and his policies.

Politicians come and go - flags last much longer.

The current British Empire / NZ flag was designed in 1869 and introduced in 1902.

The British Empire no longer exists, and hasn't for something like 50+ years.

Exactly.

Which is one of several good reasons why we need a new flag.

It was all a rather sorry affair, I imagine somebody with far too much time and power thought it would be a light-hearted distraction in the form of NZ Idol, instead it became a way to divide the nation over a petty non-issue. Now they have to make calls for unity and acceptance.

We dodged a bullet with Scottish Independence, I am now far more concerned over Brexit, for example what will be the impact on all those Kiwis with UK passports.

I voted for the alternative flag mainly due to wanting to get rid of the Union Jack of the current one, probably not the best reason.

I think the results have shown there is interest in change but needs to be handled better and taken away from being handled by a political party.

The process was flawed, but to get a design everyone likes is impossible.

The only thing I really disliked about the referendum was the politicizing of it.

Am I upset by result, no I heartened that next time we will get it right and it will definitely change to something that better represents NZ and all the peoples here.

"Canada, another former British colony, agonised over a switch in the mid-1960s with the public submitting thousands of suggested new designs including everything from beavers to the fleur-de-lis. After months of debate, parliament approved the red-and-white flag emblazoned with a maple leaf."

"Some said it looked garish, a design better suited to a beach towel, while others said the whole process was politically motivated."

56.61% voted for no change. Given the human psyche of resisting change, you could argue its a win for the new flag.

Another quote

WVTM13, a local US news station ran the angle of New Zealand's decision to stay true to it's British roots.
"New Zealanders stay with Brit-inspired flag... Silver Fern loses to flag that looks a lot like Australia's flag."

"sorry affair", how so it is a good example of democracy in action and given the result shows it was worthwhile, had it been a landslide to current flag I would probably have agreed with you.

You may think it is a non issue but, again, the results prove you wrong. "Scottish Independence" and Kiwi's holding UK passports is more of a "non issue" to me

The Canadian flag was imposed on people who didn't want it. While it stands out, that doesn't mean it's a good flag, or the right one. If anything it's a symbol of how democracy was overruled.

Bet that they now vote to change it so it doesn't look like the NZ one..

Glad we didn't have this debate when decimal currency was proposed, we'd still be talking in Pounds, Shillings and Pence such is the influence of the "All British" in NZ..
