According to visiting Wellingtonians, Auckland has a kind of public show and be seen keeping up with the Jones's culture that is almost completely absent in Wellington. That could be something to do with it.

This is what I assumed when I read the post.

Wellington business dress is very conservative, in my opinion.

I don't think it's a "keeping up with the jones" culture either. More likely the numbers in public service jobs, concentrated in a small compact CBD.

Some of the comments above about LBGT etc are laughable.

I've worked in a dozen workplaces over the last 20 odd years and I have only seen three occasions where people have had to be formally spoken to about their presentation. One was a guy who was just a slob. 2 were female receptionists. In all cases we are talking about extreme choices.

More choice, but women are negatively judged for wearing the same thing twice. Men get away with their suit all week.

Where does this judgement occur? Obviously, I speak for only myself, but I can't recall a single thing any single female colleague has ever worn. My female staff, I could have cared less if they wore the same thing, so long as it was tidy/professional.

I can't recall ever hearing a comment by a male colleague (or for that matter a female) about such a thing.

I have heard it outside of work from females on other females wearing the same clothing VERY occasionally.

I suspect in a lot of instances this "pressure" is internal.

I'm not going to comment on ladies' work fashion here, because it's far more varied IMO. But for men, I really don't understand suits. I can't understand why they continue to be so popular - I don't think they look that good, the economics of them are absurd when compared to casual clothes, they are never outright comfortable, and they are much more finicky and difficult to buy.

In terms of economics - $1500 will get you a couple of *years* worth of pretty decent quality casual clothes. $1500 will, at a stretch, get you two suits that aren't made of plastic, and then you'll still need to spend a bunch on shirts (which cost a lot more than tee shirts, especially if you want them to actually fit you), potentially ties. So really, two years worth of budget suits is probably going to run you at least $2k. Oh, and you'll probably have to spend that $1500 on stuff to wear outside the office as well.

Then there's the comfort factor. I've done everything from $200 plastic fantastics, to Working Style bespoke suits. I've removed them all from my normal wear. I'm in decent shape with an average-enough body, yet I've never worn a suit that I would consider 'comfortable'. If I'm not having belts dig in, or my neck assaulted by a stiff collar, I'm constantly having to re-tuck or adjust the stupid shirt. I never have these problems with tee shirts, or jeans that I've worn more than a few times.

The casual clothes are also many times more simple to buy. It's easy to find tee shirts or polo shirts to fit most bodies. Jeans are a much more evolved clothing item than dress pants as well - there are many different styles and fabrics so it's reasonably easy to find a very good fitting pair of those as well. Getting a button up shirt to fit well is a completely different story, and suit jackets can be quite a complex thing to get right too. I've seen so many men wearing poor fitting suits; they would look much better with a decent pair of jeans, and a knitted jersey.

I understand not wanting to go 'too casual' i.e. Hawaiian shirts and cargo pants, but I really don't see why i.e. tidy denim jeans and a button up shirt worn out shouldn't be completely acceptable work attire in almost all office situations.

A good suit is comfortable (on me anyway), looks sharp and versatile and wears well. A two pant suit is good for 2 weeks if you don't spill stuff on it. Plus you have to get it dry cleaned so no ironing required.

That said I still prefer nice jeans, jacket and shirt.

Is that really what they cost? I am about to move to NZ so was deciding if I should get some more suits or not. They go for around £250 for a budget but nice one.

Yep. It's a problem with clothes generally. Size ranges are not as complete, styles are restricted / limited, etc etc. Shoes.. more of the same. It is not absolutely the end, but if you do not match a typical style or you picked the wrong week to visit the store, etc, etc.

I am grateful my job sends me to the US a few times of the year on BC fare, I make the most of that with my 3 bags full of clothes (Shirts, Blazers, Pants, grooming stuff). US outlet malls are the best :D

For that kind of money I would probably ask if you are looking at machine or hand made. If the latter, have you considered talking to your local tailor.

It's machine. A tailored one at Working Style will set you back $2000. One closed in Wellington CBD (Taranaki St) and there's one on Dixon St but I am not confident it's keeping up with style. If you have suggestions for Wellington ones I'd like to know.
