Wow what crumy timing this is:

As celebrations rang out across the world over the stranger-than-fiction Thai cave rescue's success, a hero who was the last to leave the mountain found out his father had died.

Seems brutally unfair.

Also worth nothing he was on a family holiday which he left to come and help these kids.

Just on the news. TV 1. Once the last were rescued, there were many divers packing up all the gear. The pumps started leaking badly, they evacuated urgently, leaving the gear behind as it will flood a huge amount. Congrats to those that made the call when they did.

For a smart man, that was not a well thought through idea. Assuming it was genuine and not a publicity stunt.

Difficult to carry through the dry sections, but more importantly, next to impossible for the doctor to monitor the lad inside.

This thread has a good few pages now, and I haven't trawled through them all, so I expect this has already been discussed, but I couldn't help but think about those poor Cave Creek families, and what they must have been going through while several thousand people, and the best experts in the world put their all into getting the lads out. They surely must have been thinking 'if only half as much effort had been put into going into the mine to get their loved ones out?'. Fairfax obviously recognised it as contentious because comments were disabled on all the Cave Rescue stories on Stuff.

There will be several people praying that when they do eventually go into the mine, they don't find signs that some or all of them starved to death while waiting for help.

I give Musk the benefit of doubt, he had good intentions but in my view it was very unlikely a method and technology never previously used would be tried except perhaps if all other options were untenable. Hopefully Musk does invest in Thailand as their PM said he would welcome...

Regarding Pike River as I assume you meant Pike River and not Cave Creek. There are differences, in Thailand they found the team alive but I do wonder what would have occurred if the authorities in NZ had an indication there were survivors at Pike River. I think it unlikely they all died instantly but I'm not an expert...

Clearly the Thai cave rescue involved risk, in contrast the NZ authorities seem very risk averse but the difference of course being in Thailand they knew the team had survived where in NZ the conclusion was that there were no survivors and therefore why risk more people.

When they do get into Pike River, it will be interesting to see what is released in regards to how long the miners survived or whether they can conclude they died quickly?

I'm sure Musk had good intentions but my first thought when I saw his sub being tested was "that's not going to work in a cave". You need to be a contortionist to fit through some of the gaps, a rigid machine will never work. Looks like good technology though, just the wrong place to use it.

Plenty of people want to help in these situations - often they act before they think or are asked

I read somewhere apparently the chosen rescue method was tested/trialed in a local pool with school volunteers, if true the Thai authoritories kept it well away from the media swarm. Clearly the rescue was run like a military operation - well it was!

Not according to National, from their website. Both sides stated then it was a safety issue. National decided it was not safe, Labour asked experts who see otherwise. Its political as both parties have their take on it, and both wanted re-entry, based on if it was safe enough. So, that's even.

The decision to re-enter the Pike River Mine must remain a health and safety one which does not put further lives at risk, National’s Pike River Re-Entry spokesperson Chris Finlayson says.

“Everyone would like to see the bodies recovered but it’s always been a safety issue – never a political one.

“And the expert advice has always been that to re-enter the mine would put further lives at risk. That wasn’t an acceptable risk then and until the advice says otherwise it’s not an acceptable risk now.

“The Government has appointed a panel of experts to take another look at re-entry. Andrew Little should let them do their job without trying to influence their decision.”

But you've just quoted politicians talking about it, political parties have differing positions stated on it, they campaigned on their positions, ipso facto they made it political.
