Behodar:

It was my birthday a couple of days ago and I was given a gift voucher for an online retailer. Just went to buy something only to get "we don't let you use a gift card on that particular item" (paraphrased). Money should just be money!

That's only a step or so removed from gift cards that expire.

Cash doesn't expire, they already have the money, with inflation the real value of that card is decreasing (so they're already winning) yet for some obscure reason they deem it necessary to have an expiry date. Theft by another name if you ask me.

What possible logic could a retailer have that would lead them to that policy?

Mind telling us what the item was?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

They've framed it as a "convenience" feature. The purchase gives you 12 months' access to a service, and a year later you'll automatically get another year unless you cancel. For (their own) convenience, it's not available with a gift card because there's no guarantee that there'll be enough money to auto-renew.

You can configure the closed caption options on youtube. Doesn't help if its some idiot uploader who has burned them in because they are re-using an export made for broadcast TV with its limited and disjointed captioning support tho.

Makes more sense when you understand that its for a recurring subscription service. It can be done, but its not as straight forward.

When they introduce "The Governess" on The Chase and refer to her as the 2nd best female quizzer on the planet (or something like that). It's like they are saying "she's really smart... for a woman". This comes across as insulting, as if being female is a handicap in intellectual pursuits.

You must have really enjoyed it when he introduced her as a planet!

It also implies they have separate quizzing competitions based on gender...why?

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Better than telling it how it really is "As of October 2016, she was ranked 55th (and second among women) in the World Quizzing Championships" (from wiki) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Hegerty

Currently she is about 108th in World Quizzing Championships. https://www.worldquizzing.com/results/

Someone told me part of it is to do with accounting rather than anything else.  Keeping a liability on the books forever isn't great if the card is lost or never used.   UNSURE HOW CORRECT THIS IS, does anyone know if this is the actual reason?

Reminds me of a Noel Coward quote. When asked why he drank champagne for breakfast, he replied “Doesn’t everybody?”

That is correct. You can reinstate them but then it becomes more of a good will thing.

Really vouchers are a pain to implement, harder than cash for people to redeem, have problems where people who are ignorant with what the G and the S in GST mean quibbling over invoices. I hate vouchers.

In Whakatane we used to be able to do 1-7, but maybe five years ago it changed to just 1 and 2.

Annoyingly they sometimes change the rules "by stealth", e.g. the website currently says no plastic bags even if they're labelled 1 or 2, but the Wayback Machine confirms that it didn't used to say that!

Case in point! When I posted that on the 22nd, the website said just 1 and 2. I was just checking something just now and it now says 1, 2 and 5... and once again it was changed "by stealth" without a peep in the "What's New".
