Does anyone know if there's been changes to the way they deal with customs fees? I've had a package sitting in customs since like Thursday and everywhere I've read including the YouShop website says to wait for a letter with my customs charges. I rang NZPost though and they told me YouShop customs stuff happens via email. Has anyone experienced this?

That's correct. It still takes some time, but as opposed to a letter you get an email saying "An item addressed to you has been stopped pending New Zealand Customs clearance.

Please find attached, copies of your Notification Letter, New Zealand Customs Service Invoice and payment instructions for the item." and an attached breakdown of the costs, and instructions to pay via credit card online, bill pay or bank transfer.

In case anyone's interested I rang NZ Post about my YouShop package which has been "Held for clearance" for a week and they were very helpful, explained much of the process to me and why it's taking so long. Apparently right now they're sort of in between an old process and a new process which will speed things up considerably (issuing GST invoices before the item even arrives in the country so it can go straight to the buyer!), but things are slower during the in between period.

That's great to hear they're going to start issuing invoices before the item is even in the country. That's one of the reasons I go with FedEx when I can, they take care of all that while it's in transit.

Things certainly seem to be quicker than a few months ago. This is my latest experience to date:

11th Nov - Parcel delivered by FedEx to YouShop warehouse USA

12th Nov - International Departure

17th Nov - Arrived in NZ

23rd Nov - Customs Notice Arrived

Damn that sounds great, the timeline for my Oculus Rift is more like this:

3rd Nov - Arrived at USA warehouse from Amazon

9th Nov - Arrived in NZ and held for clearance

23rd Nov - Still held for clearance

At this point I'm wondering what Customs could possibly be doing which takes this long... Maybe VR headsets go into a special queue so that they can receive a thorough inspection via rigorous gameplay?

It's especially annoying because I paid an extra $50 for quick shipping... The estimated delivery date was the 15th :(

EDIT: Speak of the devil... Just received my invoice from customs! So it took a full two weeks from arrival in NZ to getting my customs email. Not super happy with that tbh... Hopefully Auckland to Dunedin won't take too long.

I had same issue and then checked my junk/spam folder on the email account and found the invoice from customs. Check there?

Good suggestion but it arrived just now so no need.

Another interesting thing to note is that I applied for a client code because the total value was over $1,000NZD but apparently I didn't need to because nobody asked for it.
