Just a suggestion, but I would prefer to see any reference to Pike River moved to a separate topic. This is (and should be allowed to continue as) a good news thread rather than get confused with another unrelated but similar issue.

Yes, very funny. KFC (and McDonalds) is all over the place in Thailand, along with a variety of other fast food outlets. First boy asks for "Khao phad moo kraub"; fried rice with crispy pork - one of my favourite dishes... very much looking forward to being back there in just over 6 weeks! :-)

The kitchen sink jacinda ardern thread has more or less destroyed much of geekzone's topic discipline. A entire politics forum to create new topics and it all goes in one thread.

No one knew they were alive until the divers investigated and found them alive. They were very lucky that specialists were called and available. If that initial investigation had not occurred...

1. They shouldn't have been there in the first place. Local knowledge + signs to warn not to.

2. They did it as an initiation rite of passage - my god did they get one.

3. If Americans tried, they wouldn't fit through the gaps and nothing would have happened.

4. A rescuer gave his life for the gang of 13. A woman gave her soulmate. A family gave up their son.

5. Some amazing planning, execution and luck[blessing] to get them out [pumps failed immediately after last guy got out]. Some might call a miracle.

Agree. That they left their bikes there was huge. If it was walkable, and they walked in tear as is, who knows if they would have been discovered till too late

In today's Herald, Musk has lost the plot, calling hero diver a 'pedo'.
I think Musk has lost his mind and thinks he's Tony Stark.

Crazy. To be fair, Unsworth gave his own barrel of smart mouth words. If Musk had offered the help in a genuine humanitarian way (instead of hey look at me) it would have been responded to in kind. "not sure its suitable, but hey thanks, pop them there just in case, appreciated" So a bit of tit for tat. BUT, Musks final mouthing needs condemnation of the frequent kind

It seems that the intl divers were called when the Thai SEALs were struggling to get through far enough (obviously cave diving not being their forte), last night I saw on TV one of the Intl divers saying they had tell the (young) Thai divers to rest. Clearly the Thai SEALs were motivated

I also read that the use of stretchers were was refinement after the practicing they did at a local pool which included chairs in the pool to simulate the tight passages

The stretchers turned out to be a pretty good idea. I wonder if they invented that or if it had been done before? No wonder the boys were more or less knocked out for the extraction - I imagine being strapped into the stretcher, unable to move, under water, would be absolutely terrifying.

I suspect they found during the practice at a local pool having a boy attached to oneself whilst swimming difficult or problematic. An object like a stretcher would be far more practical and maneuverable for the escorting divers not to mention in sections with air they could apparently float it, then hand over to stretcher bears on the walk-able sections. Smart and innovative thinking

FYI The core dive team doing the actual rescue was 13 intl divers and 5 Thai SEALs for a total of 18. I suspect they used the same core team multiple times but with loads of support i.e. other divers etc in situ to replace and assist if needed

Surely the stretchers won't fit through the narrow bits of the cave?
