Wheel of Time back story for anyone interested.  No genuine spoilers but you may learn aspects of the world prematurely compared to just watching the series.

In this world there is source of magic called the one power.  This has two aspects Saidar and Saidin.  Saidin can be channeled by men (Asha'man) it's harsh, difficult to control and very powerful, Saidar is channeled by women (Aes Sedai) and is more gentle but still very powerful.

In this world events are woven by the wheel of time.  It's circular.  Each cycle is an age.   The story is set in the third age.   The weaving of the wheel can be seen as fate/destiny.  Some people have the ability to reweave their own fate (and by extension those around them) they are called Ta'veren.

In the age of legends men and women used the one power, they were different but equally powerful.

The overall baddie is the Dark One.   The Dragon was Lews Therin Thelamon he and his followers used magic to imprison the Dark One.  But the Dark One had the last laugh he tainted Saidin.  This caused any male channeling the  one source to go mad.  Notably The Dragon ended up killing his family. This mass outpouring of uncontrolled magic 'broke' the world, rearranging the geography at an apocalyptical scale.  Civilisation, technology and arcane arts were largely lost.

In the third age, there are no Asha'man.  The Aes Sedai hunt down men who can channel power and 'gentle' them, which means removing their ability to channel power.  Women who can channel are taken in and trained to become Aes Sedai in 'The White Tower"

The Aes Sedai are divided into seven Ajah (sects).  Each has it's own area of expertise.  E.g. Blue is justice, Red hunts down men who can channel power.

The Aes Sedai serve the light (antithesis of the dark one). The Children of Light also serve the light.  They are a fundamentalist militia who also conduct an inquisition.

The servants of the dark one are shadow-spawn - creatures that are made not born.  This includes humanoid monster called Shades who control trollocks - bipedal monsters made of variety of animal body parts.

That's the basics. Enjoy.

Thanks for reawakening my interest in this series.

I have all the The Wheel of Time books, have had since initial release. A thoroughly enjoyable series. I hope they have done justice to it. In scope and depth it is similar to the Foundation series but I think it might be a bit easier to write a screen play for though.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Having loved the Wheel of Time Books I must say I disappointed by the TV series so far (2 Episodes watched).

The character development seems to be missing - I accept there is a lot of material to cover if they are trying to fit book 1 into the first series, but still.

It feels like they are hitting major milestones and moving quickly onto the next highlight.

I'm guaranteed to watch the full series regardless and maybe my issues come from having read the books several times, in my head then characters are fully developed and my expectations are 2 high.
I can see some of TV characters already developing better than others at the moment so I'll hold judgement until the series ends.

But the books are amazing - if you even only half like the TV show, do yourself a favor read the first book.
Then be prepared to be addicted and have 13 more books to read. Epic set of novels.

They're trying to shoehorn a Game of Thrones level of success into it from the start, which never works (see DCEU at the start...).  These things need to grow naturally into their popularity and that always comes from the integrity of the story, not just from throwing Amazon level budgets at some CGI.

Not quite right Aes Sedai were once male or female and after the breaking the males were either gentled (cut off from the source) or went mad and died.  The Asha'man was set up by Rand in his battle with the dark one.

Thanks.  Good point.

Easy to get confused with a big long series like that.

Same. They are trying too hard to make some of the characters boss level awesome from the get go, when they weren't like that to start with.

Nynaeve is written as a bit of a matronly character - prematurely old at heart, overbearing and prudish; strong willed but actually lacking in self confidence.  Meanwhile here she is in E1 putting a knife to the throat of a warder like she's Zena.  It's a bit cliched.

Perrin was written as a strong-silent type un-worldy Smith's apprentice.  It's unclear why they made him the village smith and gave him a wife only to kill her off. in E1.

Matt and Rand seem closest to their written characters so far.

It's always a bit odd seeing characters you've developed mental avatars of brought to life and be way different to how you've imagined them.  But in this case, they are unnecessarily wide of the mark with their characters and seem to be trying to make them really 'cool'.  IMO that's what made the Shannara series on SyFy rubbish.

GoT series on the other hand generally got the characters just right in most cases and allowed them to develop with time.

The Aliens on TVNZ On Demand - From the team that made Misfits.

Great little show, and a shame it wasn't renewed for a second season.

The Outlaws - BBC IPlayer

Staring of all people Christopher Walken.

Great show from Stephen Merchant, who also stars, about of mixed bunch on Community Service clean up duty, when all isn't quite as it seems.

Great example of a British Black Comedy with some fun twists along the way, fingers crossed for a season 2.

Hellbound.  It has the catch-22 of dubbed English or read subtitles (or learn a new language 😬).

But despite that, it's enjoyable.

CSI : Vegas has Started, Big surprise to see what happened to Brass and having Grissom and Sarah back is nice.

Just a rehashed storyline though only 10 episode in first season might not get any further than that. 6/10

Finished watching Foundation, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The parts focusing on the Genetic Dynasty were the best parts, and the brothers Empire the most interesting characters.

Have watched several episodes of Invasion, but for the most part have been unimpressed. Advertising it as featuring Sam Neil is pretty misleading.
