Might be better off instead of a supermarket just a massive distribution centre with online selling portal?
Amazon hears you.
Is there a amazon type place in USA where you could order food products that can bring to NZ? Thinking of sauces etc

The lack of imagination in NZ supermarket offerings.
The same old stuff, all the time.
We use the likes of New World for the high volume stuff and use specialty shops for anything else. We travel a bit to do it though like to Greytown from Wellington to get meat but that's the price of a small population.
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Part of the lack of imagination might be to do with too many supermarkets? Do we have more per capita than other countries?

We only have two mainstream chains, Progressive Enterprises and Foodstuff Cooperative. Given that a lot of what grocery stores sell is perishable they tend to stock high turnover stock lines which is logical and serves the vast majority of their customer base. Some like New World Thorndon(Wellington) stock a wider range of stock lines that meet the needs of its particular client base.

Fish-tank heater thermostats.
Apparently they can fail-on, and then you cook all your fish...
:-(
And room thermostats - my one tries to be cleaver by switching off the heating before the room gets to the set temp. It is some stupid power saving feature. So you have to set the temp higher to get the room warm. Then it sometimes actually heats the room to the set temp. Meaning the room is now too hot and energy has been wasted heating it to that temp.

That's a feature.
The new Tefal Fish-o-matic...
