Just worked out my wife and I wandered past that Cambodian restaurant and had something to eat in the place next door around 6 weeks ago. I suppose that's not terribly close in the cosmic scheme of things but its not exactly a heavy tourist area and I would have never guessed that to be an area that terrorists would pick on.
Terrible thing to have happened - my thoughts go out to the people of Paris....

Freitasm got in ahead of me. I don't regard the comments I objected to as being so inappropriate that they should be sanctioned in any way, I just don't think that line of discussion should be pursued any further. This is a serious matter and it has nothing to do with the eating habits of animals.

A meal out, a concert with friends, an evening in Paris should be pleasure not a horror. Yet another truly sad day to add to too many sad days. Kia kaha Paris, Kia kana France.

I grew up with the IRA bombings and was in Deal when they blew up the Marines do have some inkling, although these religious nutters are worse.

We should be a lot more vigilant.

We have had a couple of terrorist attacks long ago, although nothing on this scale. Rainbow warrior and the Wellington trades hall.

If we allow it to affect our day to day lives then haven't the terrorists got what they wanted?

I am really glad I no longer live in Europe, I can't see how there isn't going to be a huge disruption to to average peoples day to day lifes.

RW was not a terrorist attack, it was sanctioned action by a foreign government and was aimed at Green peace not NZ.

The thing the terrorists seem to fail to grasp is that eventually their actions will result in less and less tolerance for their religion and views outside the confines of the natural home of Islam.

Perhaps the idea of three squares a day in an internment camp appeals to them.

It's probably a simple question of where your face fits. France is very multiculti - especially Paris - so it is easy to blend in. Thanks to Frau Merkel, Europe is filling up with migrants of one kind or another at an alarming rate so one more is no surprise to anyone, so to speak. Russia is more homogeneous so a foreign face stands out and draws attention. Russian is also harder to learn and less commonly learned than French.

I think the reason ISIS, ISIL, Daesh target France is because of France's control of (what is now) Syria between the world wars.

France had a fairly appalling reign over that area when Britain and France split up the middle east after WW1.

Of course that in now way justifies the atrocities against people in Paris today.

I suppose it is possible that they could still be bleating on about events of ages ago - but on that basis, the Italians are in for it when the lads and I have finished in the shed. Blooming Romans - what have they ever done for us. And don't get me started on how much interest the Danes owe us on the Danegeld...

Personally, I think that they are just mad.

This is exactly what they want. They hope to set everyone against each other. Do not confuse these guys with ordinary Muslim people because they want you to do that.
