This is the elephant in the room. The large rate of population growth has to be a major factor in climate change but there is no political appetite to do anything about it because no politician wants to tell young people that they can't have kids, nor do they want to accelerate the aging populations that we're seeing in western countries.

Do we want to turn into China which do have policies over restricting population growth. The problem is it doesn't work. NZ government policies are to increase our population by any means even if we don't have the housing for them, as it increases the tax payer base.

The Winter before this one, here, was the coldest since move in. The last Summer was the coldest here since move in. The warmest driest Summer was two or three years ago, and each following has been colder than the last.

I welcome the end of below zero pipe freezing Winters and I can plant my citrus and subtropical orchard which won't get annihilated by frosts. But I feel cheated by these claims it is on it's way.

Look - One Volcano eruption throws more c02 in a few days than 5 years of human emissions. Warming and cooling are natural cycles. In the 1200s they were growing grapes clear across UK.

In the last few years there have been thicker ice masses in parts of Antarctica while the other side had 'record' ice loss reported in the media - but what wasnt reported was the volcanic activity affecting the ice melt.

A few years back global warming was going to kill us - now it's climate change - meaning no one knows if we are going to freeze or burn.

Before that was sun spots, asteroids, ozon elayer, cancer, breast cancer, aids, sars, ( wow sars - that's a real killer, second only to ... wait third only to ... oh wait it doesnht even come close to malaria, plague, cholera, typhoid, TB, and so many other greeblies it doesnt even register.).

Doom and gloom sells papers and goodness knows what else. Its all a money making scam look at carbon credits - what a joke - traded on the stock exchanges so to speak - and that doesn't do diddly squat to remove one atom of CO2 or anything else.

Come back in 10 or 20 years- we will probably be due to die from burnt toast and bacon causing cancer -- oh wait - we already did that didn't we.

Wake up. NZ and most western european countries have negative population growth stats. hell denmark had adverts to get parents to send their kids (married) on holiday to shag denmarks population back into positive growth figures.

As long as we have trump, USA, the the 51st state of USA (UK that's you) and all the corporate govts killing the undesirables, we will be okay - and hey - another round of AIDS for our good friends in Africa - they are beginning to finally recover. Trump bless the lords army. THe Jihadists are killing more of their own than they are us, ISIS has killed off all the other groups and once they have sucked their countries dries of the billions we give them will begger off and let that cycle happen all over again. keep the middle east in crisis, keep africa starving and under tin pot dictators supported by the UK / US / China etc nad let china work out its own woes and we will be fine.

look at S America, tons of resources and no population worries - the police hose down the street kids letting the poor spend their time and energy shagging instead of revolting.

In amongst this sarcasm you will find dark grains of truth abut why population explosion isn't an issue. 90% of the worlds wealth is held in declining population economies. We'll be right mate.

Yep. While the real issue is averages, not daily highs, the creeping average will reign in new records. At least a new record will garner talk and chatter, than an article saying the temp rose. 0.2 C last year

20 here in ChCh yesterday. Not the first high teen type temp in winter this year either

the weekend was fun with horizontal rain, supersonic birds, aerial trampolines and driving through surf, sand and drift wood on the road. Made me think though we need to relocate a lot of roads, ban drift wood and ground the birds on certain days. The nations wheelchairs will need to be redesigned with wider tyres that are easily deflated for off road use and walking frames will need to be heavier.

One of our neighbours will need to start buying flags by the gross and there needs to be law review regarding leaves, and sundry other airborne foliage and trees.

Our Daffodils start to flower usually between late winter through to early summer so from about now. We have some flowering. They did start to pop up a little early as we have only had a couple of light frosts.

I'm enjoying the warmer weather.

Winters are milder. Snapper stay in Tasman Bay later in the year and my power bills are getting cheaper.

But just to do my bit I have stopped deliberately breeding.

Also I used my big, greedy SUV to rescue a Prius that was mired in grass.

Also two of our three boats can be fuelled by mung beans.

This last summer was certainly the longest spell of the warmest weather I can remember for the 19-odd years (split across two terms) I have lived in Wellington. But I have to admit I enjoyed it, even though it could be a symptom of the world going to hell in a handbasket. In fact, perhaps that's why it's getting warmer - we're getting closer to hell.

Of course, I'd like it to stop now as I wouldn't want it getting any hotter. My wife read something last year that said if global warming continued at it's current rate, in another decade Wellington would be like Brisbane. How awful! Far too many kiwis in Brisbane...
