Yeah, I was wondering about this... Sure, they do charge up-front in some categories where they don't take a slice of the sale price (vehicles for sale, houses etc; pets I think, and I assume other similar ones), but for general listings I've never noticed listing fees. You can pay if you want your listing in bold, or come up first in the category, or if you want to pick the time the auction closes etc, but unless it's changed recently it's easy to not select these options.

There's your problem, each of them were piss poor attempts to dethrone Trademe, and each it's fair to say failed miserably.

Or until facebook decide to take on ebay. There are NZ based facebook plugins too, one that got a lot of crowd funding money, although I haven' heard much from that. As soon as TM start charging over 10%, I think they will get a lot of defectors. Many people are now using facebook instead. You can get good prices on trademe, which offsets the auction fees somewhat.

Depends on how many things you list, I remember when I and a friend were selling on there we had to decide which products to drop off in which categories some week, as it was based on your total sales for how many free listings before you had to pay for each of them.

Yes, if you list more than 50 items at a time, you then have to pay listing fees on numbers over 50. Not really sure why, people just setup multiple accounts under different family members

I thought they only allowed 1 account per address (don't ask how they know my address, I have no idea!). I once set up an account for my wife to list our house for sale and immediately got banned. Didn't even refund the listing fee.

No they are fine with multiple accounts, I have 3 address verified to home and more with this delivery address on it. One for each company, a personal one for me and one that was a friend who is over seas at the moment and wanted to get some stuff delivered here.

They know your address because you put it in trademe to send to sellers. Unless you are one of those idiot buyers that likes to make sellers lives difficult by emailing it, usually in the body of an email with the subject "trademe" or something equally dumb.

Nope that's not the case. I put a house listing on a new username. No address listed. When I asked them they said the ip address was the same as the other account and against their policy. That was 12 years ago. I wouldn't publish my address or phone number on trademe for all to see.

I regard the standard listing as pointless. The paid listings are the only ones worth bothering with unless you're selling cheap junk.

Why do you say that? I have never done a paid listing, and had no problem selling things and getting good prices. The thing is that free listings have very little disadvantage over basic paid listings these days, as the mobile site and app will show the product image thumbnails. Only the desktop site is crippled, and doesn't display thumbnail images, but most people don't use that now, as more than 50% of website visitors are now using mobile devices.

I found that paid enhancements attraceted the worst sort of buyers on cheap tat. Then they saw the same thing listed for less without the enhancements and would demand to pay that amount because "its not fair" or some crap like that.

Seeing as we're having a TradeMe rant, I find this mildly annoying

It looks like you can pick EV3 Mindstorms for a good price, until you get to the bottom of the auction to find it ships from the UK and there is a link to check whether import charges may apply, which in this case of course they will and this makes it more expensive than what you can buy it for at Toyworld down the road.

Edit: another thing that annoys me is the inconsistent behaviour of pasting URLs into BBCode, grrr, if someone can fix for me please do so

Well, that's a completely different matter! General listings are free unless you elect to guild the lily, so to speak, so your statement is wrong. It's based solely on your perception of the relative merits of a standard versus fancier listing, which, of course, is exactly what TM want you to think so they get money whether it sells or not!

The only thing I've sometimes paid for is to select the closing time - if it's a desirable item, I theorise it's better to have this closing at a time where more people are likely to be online. Personally, I think the pricing of an item is more important than a bold heading etc - not asking too much (or one of those stupid auctions with low start price relative to high reserve) ensures attention. And, of course, a good description and good photos... People will find your listing if they're looking for an item, provided you do this - especially something desirable like an iPhone.

Regardless, that is the de minimis part of the bill. Their 'success fees' seem to be getting higher.

What I can't work out is why no one is undercutting them and succeeding: this should be low hanging fruit in NZ where people hate spending money!
