semigeek: Was talking to a person the other day how if they have a meal with someone, the other person must use both knife and fork while eating.  Sounds kind of extreme OCD but I digress.  So how many of you use both knife and fork, or just a fork when eating?

This person you were talking to the other day, What happens to him/her if the other person only uses a fork
for example ? Do they get angry or afraid or what. ? Does the other person have to hold the knife and fork
the whole time ?

Interesting.

Knife and Fork - Knife on the left, fork on the right, generally speaking. Pasta and asian / indian dishes - mainly fork and or spoon if necessary.

And held properly - not in a fisted-grip. One of the things I've encourage my kids to do - a bit of decorum whilst at the dinner table doesn't go amiss.
Simple stuff like keeping yer gob shut whilst chow downing, don't leave the table until you have finished chewing, and elbows off the table.

When finished, knife and fork on the plate to the right.

Heh, I've abandoned, or cut short the occasional dinner date when I have come across sloppy eaters. I have some standards, low that they may be, but some standards nevertheless :-)

At home I just use hands or just a fork unless I really need a knnife. Even when I eat steaks/chicken breasts, etc I just pick ithe whole thing up with a fork and gnaw at it. When out to dinner I use knife & fork or chopsticks properly

Just to be different, I use a fork and spoon... but only for curry. I'm half Indian and was brought up that way, although the traditional way is to have it on a banana leaf and eat it with your right hand :)

Getting upset over someone else's choice in eating utensils seems pretty weird, if I don't need a knife I don't use one - if someone else wants to use both a knife and fork it doesn't make any difference to me.

I must admit due to my upbringing I am a bit of a "etiquette snob" shall we say, and find it very hard when around others who do not use the necessary utensils depending on the occasion. In saying that I would never correct anyone, unless it is over the top noise while eating and it is a close enough friend that it wouldn't be plain rude.

Knife and fork. Held properly, knife in right hand, fork in left.

However, on occasions where I am just using a fork (rare) I hold this in the right hand.

I use a knife and fork - was brought up to use them. I'm right-handed, I hold the fork in my left, knife in my right (the correct way). If I am eating rice or the likes and not needing the knife, then I will hold the fork in my right hand.

I think they get angry but not say anything to the person, just keep it to themselves and then tell me about it later.  They also told me, the other person if using a knife and fork has to hold it properly. Strange

Rather than use the Pencil Grip on the knife, for example?
