Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding : Ice cream man , Ice cream man
Nothing is impossible for the man who doesn't have to do it himself - A. H. Weiler
Lizard1977: I've recently watched first two episodes of Black Mirror. Heard really good things about this, and as I enjoyed anthology shows like The Outer Limits I was expecting to enjoy this show too. The writing and concepts are definitely good, with a sprinkling of futuristic "sci-fi" rather than dousing it in the stuff. I read somewhere that it was the present, slightly tweaked into the future. While I did enjoy both these episiodes, I have to qualify the use of the word "enjoy." The first episode, about a terrorist threat made against the British PM after a popular royal is abducted, where the PM is forced to have sex with a pig on live TV to get the royal released, was outright disturbing. It started out very simply, even funny in parts, but as the reality of the threat sinks in, and it moves towards the inevitable conclusion, the full horror of what the show's message becomes clearer. It's disturbing not because I'm a sensitive flower, but because the satire/commentary on the state of modern life is so laser precise, it's unnerving.
The second episode wasn't as disturbing, but was more depressing and glum - but again, in a "good" way, by holding up the titular mirror to our warped society. It revolves around a future society where people pedal bikes to earn merit points, which they can spend on things, or use their points to gain entry to a reality show called Hot Shot. It's an obvious dig at shows like X Factor, and society's fascination with humiliation and fame. But while the twist is less disturbing than the first episode, it was more depressing and dispiriting.
That would be my only criticism of the show, and it's a mild one at that. Whereas shows like Outer Limits and Twilight Zone used a similar format and themes, I found their conclusions to be more sinister or clever, or occasionally hopeful. There were certainly depressing and disturbing episodes as well, but I find myself having to be in the right frame of mind to watch Black Mirror, for fear of sending myself in a spiral of depression, a precaution I don't have to take with other shows. That being said, it's still a show worth watching.

redmouse: Peter Kay's Car Share on iPlayer, I'd been eyeing it with some suspicion for a while but it turned out to be very funny. And Moone Boy season 3, also jolly good.

Thought I was ready for this (having read all the books long before giving the TV series a chance) but it was still bloody traumatic. I'm glad I don't remember my dreams because I've a feeling they're going to be pretty grim tonight.
Incindre: Game of Thrones Season 3: The Rains of Castamere... AKA The Red Wedding.
