They do the annoying thing of shipping from stores instead of a central warehouse.

So my basic order for a few cheap items.

Resulted in 4 courier bags sent to me from different locations.

For $5. No wonder they are losing money.

*chuckle* my experience last week was almost identical.  Half a dozen cheap items arrived in 3 different poorly packed bags including a $2 calculator.

Last one out, turn out the lights.

I've got one but couldn't get it to activate. The DSE staff seemed to think possibly they expired after a year??

If you're in Wellington and can pick up you can have it for free - it's one of the prepay freebies ones I think?

I've just seen 40 pack of aa batteries for $8 which I didn't think was too bad. Other batteries also on sale.

Also 3.5mm headphone cable for $2. Micro USB (Android) charging cable $3.
Nothing amazing, but not bad for a well known retailer.

I Might have a look for the batteries for my 3d glasses.

There were AA battery 16 packs for $2, so for $8 you would get 64 batteries. Not sure if they would still have stock but I grabbed some in the weekend.

The 16 packs I saw were the older gold coloured ones, the bigger packs were the newer whitish ones so I went for them because I worry about shelf life. Not a huge difference and I still have a pack and a half of bunnings varta to get thru before I am on to the DS cells.

Saw a couple of Sony cameras on the 'bargains' table at DSE Riccarton today Sony superzoom HX400 for $269 I think, and a Sony A6000 mirrorless as well.    Can't remember price on the A6000.   Interestingly, these were cameras they never had on display prior to the big sale.    So they might be moving some stock around from one branch to another or straight from the warehouse, who knows.

afe66: But that shop already exists - JayCar.

DSE is where I go if JayCar hasn't got something I need but they never have it either... Not sure why I bother anymore going to DSE.
the sad part is that DSE used to be known as this store (as his post was suggesting)

a lot of us grew up with DSE gear and their funway kits.  my first bit of soldering was the fm transmitter from the funway 2 book and i was hooked. my copy became more dog eared and worn out than your grandmas edmonds cooking book

I really should have looked into how thin that speaker wire was before ordering it. They don't even specify the cross sectional area of it on the listing.

Well they mention 24AWG in the listing, but that is meaningless waffle. Looks like telephone wire or worse. Guess it will be ok for a doorbell or something.

The price on the a6000 (with the 16-50mm lens) was $599 last week - pretty good deal as the Sony RRP is $1199 and the cheapest price listed on PriceSpy today for any of the big box retailers is $835 at Harvey Norman (PriceSpy also says JB HiFi have it for $849 but I was in the new Lower Hutt JB store just last night and it was on their shelf for $1049).

The lower spec A5100 is also around for $400 or so. Lower fps and no EVF being the major differences, and maybe no flash hot shoe from memory. If you got an A6000 then do the firmware update to get the best quality video codec.

Personal vibe in stores is they were MASSIVELY overstocked in rubbish. Like they went all in on cellphone and tablet covers for example.

Lots of instore items weren't listed on their website. Eg the cameras above etc

Yeah, I too used to wander through looking at all those components and kits.
My comment was in reply to poster that DSE should rebrand to what it used to be in yee ole days, but that niche has been taken over too.

To be honest, I have no idea what DSE is of these days.

Hobby Electronics - Nope, go to Jaycar
TVs,DVDs,Freeview, etc - Nope go to Harvey Normans/ JB Hifi or Noel Leemings
Electronic "Toys", e.g. helicopters etc - Go back to Jaycar
PS/Xbox Games - Off we go to EB Games/JB Hifi
Cameras - Noel Leemings, JB Hifi, Harvey Normans

All I can see is that DSE has no niche, its just doing what everyone else is, but with less stock, less variety and prices no different.

The have become Australasia's "Tandy/Radio Shack".
