Pak n Save not doing well in the media today https://www.1news.co.nz/2025/03/04/charges-filed-against-two-paknsaves-for-misleading-specials/

Silverdale and Hamilton shops prosecuted over alleged Fair Trading Act breaches.

Once again, the ComCom needs powers to force monopoly breakups. Or otherwise do a David Cunliffe and unbundle the sector.

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. That’s a pretty big claim. Who is being racist to what race?

So no evidence at all. There is nothing in that article that describes anyone’s race.

Handle9: If the transaction is greater than $1000 it's a legal requirement to issue an invoice with the buyers name and one identifier (address, email address, phone number, NBN or website).

The one item and no id required is a very low requirement. It would be reassuring if Pak-n-save policy clearly stated that is all they need. It is on the silly side for buying groceries with eftpos.

There is no evidence it was requested selectively in practice. I'm guessing it was. Asking for details for groceries does sound weird to anyone. Like it might be a element of some scam.

Also, this is totally inflation proof. Yeah right..

Purist Audio Design High End Power Cable

Trademe listing, bids start at $1,500 for a 2m power cord.  Which has the magical property of woo-woo'ing the 15m of TPS running inside the wall leading to it, and then whatever's beyond that in the street wiring.

I wonder what Act empowers TradeMe to make regulations?

"FURUTECH high audio grade (NZ) 3 pin plug will be fitted in accordance with TM regulations."

I suppose if you're dumb enough to believe the power cable makes a difference, you'll believe anything.

I think it's just a badly-phrased reference to TM enforcing NZ law that doesn't allow sale of something with non-NZ plugs on it.

Grumble. I was going to pin them on 'supply flexible cord' being a Declared High Risk Article (meaning you have to get specific Worksafe approval to sell it), but 12AWG and screened both fall outside that gazette note.

PB Tech sell those too, but slightly better pricing.

That plug would need approval, and when I last looked I did not see anyone local importing them and supplying that. Plenty on Aliex available, and that one looks to have sheathed pins but the ones I ordered would not meet 3112 spec as the pins were not in the right place on the face to fit in a shrouded outlet. Who knows, perhaps they have had them tested and have the documentation but I have doubts.

Edit - looked up the brand on the plug and it seems someone is bothering to sell with an approval number. $180 for a 3 pin plug that looks the same as the cheap aliex ones. Guess they have to pay for that rubber stamping somehow.

Assuming the same place @richms found, they sell a $600 version of the plug. There's a noticeable sound difference though; I think it's coming from the echoing of my empty wallet.

It's a similar thing with "high quality" HDMI cables.

IIRC that has slightly returned with newer versions of HDMI that cram way more bandwidth down the same cable.

Emphasis on the slightly.

Good example of some slang

"Skimpflation": cutting corners to save money but ending up with worse quality, leading to more expenses later.

"Milkshake Duck": When someone goes viral for something positive, but soon after, their problematic past or bad behavior is exposed, ruining their reputation.

"Ratioed into Oblivion": Posting something online that backfires so badly that it damages your credibility.

"Clout Goblin": Someone so desperate for attention that they act reckless and damage their reputation.

"Went Out Sad": When someone’s downfall is especially embarrassing or avoidable.

Huawei caught faking a Maybach incident, secretly deflating tires; shockingly deceptive

So far the only hits I'm getting for that are social media outrage videos, so there may be a different set of slang terms that apply to it.
