Its the same fee in the next step, calling is just a quicker way of paying for it than waiting for the letter to arrive

Im going to be VERY borderline on this, depending on what youshop depend to charge i might be under or over by a few dollars (ive guesstimated myself to be at $58.13 of the $60 threshold). Fees for going over the threshold even by a couple of dollars will result in a $98 charge, ouch.. fingers are crossed :D

a) Wait for a letter
The standard procedure is for NZ Post to send a letter with the customs detail, and the total due. This does not include the $135.82 fee from NZ Post to facilitate the clearance through customs unless you specifically ask for the service. In most cases you can pay Customs directly yourself.
This letter typically takes 1 to 3 working days to arrive, and it has all the details you need to pay customs.

Is this fee separate from the customs you have to pay? (in the next step)

You don't have to pay NZ Post $135.82 as a rule. You'll be paying Customs directly, so it's only the customs fees that you'll have to pay (if you need to).

The $135.82 is only if you want NZ Post to facilitate the package through customs, which I believe means that they get it through customs very quickly, but then you have to pay NZ Post directly with the fee.

If NZ post is looking to improve this service that would be one area they could try and improve on. my $60 postage is probably still worth it as the items I am getting were not eligible for shipping to NZ, but adds a lot to the cost!

To be fair they're pretty clear about volumetric weight. The uncertainty is mostly around packaging, with many vendors using boxes far larger than is required. Amazon has been pretty good so far, but it would be nice to be able to say "hey put this in the smallest possible box please".

I got shoes from amazon recently, the box they used was only a fraction larger than the shoe box.

Probably because shoes are not considered fragile. DVD's, CD's also come minimally packed but of course there is no need to use a freight forwarder for them.

Kindle's are also in a minimally sized box. You sure it is Amazon that use huge boxes or their partners?

Amazon themselves definitely use larger than necessary boxes I have had it with 3 or 4 things in the past that I got forwarded to me.

Live chat lied! Still nothing happening with my parcel.

I have had some very large (shipped direct) boxes from Amazon containing toys.

I sense a business opportunity here for some student(s) who live out of Ca (to avoid sales tax for Amazon).

Setup a e-commerce site and take payments via Paypal. Have stuff shipped to your parent's home and stash them in a garage.

Then once a day make a trip to the Post Office and send the packages. They could even offer a repacking service to overcome some of the huge packaging that is causing many of us problems with postage costs.

Charge $12/package for handling and perhaps a 10% markup on the postage.

Customer support via e-mail or Skype perhaps at certain hours of the day.

From what I have read and from personal experience, the Youshop service is less than satisfactory.

Youshop do ok, so long as you're not in a hurry. They could add a repacking service, that would hurt their revenue but would probably increase usage enough to make up for it.
